What is your go to visual prototyping tool?

I am looking for a quick and easy to use visual prototyping tool to quickly put some screens together and get a flow going to visualize my idea. Ideally I would want something free

Do you have any recommendations?

I find the free version of Gravit Designer works well for quick prototypes and graphic creation. https://www.designer.io

    Sketch + InVision.

Sketch allows you to build a component library to share across all your screens, making it a pretty powerful tool for prototyping. You can start with basic shapes for wireframing and then update the components when you’re ready for higher fidelity.

InVision provides a Sketch plugin so you can link screens together and publish them to the web as clickable prototypes.

A bit of a learning curve but a pretty efficient workflow once you figure it out.

Adobe XD is great for web and mobile app prototyping and they've made it free!

+1 on Adobe XD. I love that I can publish the prototype online with a password to have customers review the results from their discovery calls with us. The ability to be able to make the mockups clickable gives a great flow experience.

Marvel App is great for flows: https://marvelapp.com

    Pencil/paper or Powerpoint for starters.

For something a bit more sophisticated (ie a learning curve), https://bubble.is is a powerful codeless app development platform and it's free (with subscription option). I've gotten thru the learning curve and would use it for the scenario you describe. Then you can keep iterating within Bubble, build you MVP and take the app to production.

While not a full prototyping too, I really like fellow IndieHackers wireframe too Whimsical - https://whimsical.co I find it really easy and fast to draw with.

I like XD for basic and interactive wireframes and Illustrator for more detailed outlines.

From my research most people seemed to use Invision+Sketch (Mac OS only, so didn't test).

I've tested almost all (Figma, UXPin, Proto.io, Marvel, Mockplus, etc), but the most promising, based on spec tables, I haven't yet because it is Mac OS only too - Framer X. Maybe you can try it. There'll be a Windows version soon.

    Balsamiq, then HTML/CSS.

I'm a big fan of Sketch.

Adobe XD! Best part is that it's free!

    Paper and pencil.

If you have 20 bucks, a wall and 30 minutes -> Paint it with whiteboard paint. This is the only thing I've used that's better than 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper.

Edit: Go right to code if you can and skip this step altogether. It's an unneeded layer of abstraction.

I find that creating a quick wireframe helps me build what I want. Once I have the wireframes ready, I can stop thinking about "what" to build, and start figuring out "how" to build it (with code).

I typically use Mockingbird (https://gomockingbird.com/) to do this since it's so simple, but Adobe XD looks interesting.

Sketch got me up and running with what I needed very quickly, managed to do it during the free trial
