The idea is, that you subscribe to a person(builder) and get access to all the products that builder has built for free/paid (or whatever else the terms of the subscription).
I see something like this on Github where developers/organizations sponsor other developers to contribute to open source projects.
What if the same business model was applied to consumer products? (This may sound stupid, but I'm going to ask anyway)
It would be great if you share your thoughts from the builder's POV and consumer's POV?
It's an interesting idea. I feel like the person would need to have a good reputation within their community already and have a decent-sized audience, but it could work.
True.. this is something I've also seen on patreon where content creators or edu-creators ask the viewers to subscribe to them on patreon and it unlocks the content. These edu-creators create content on different niche.
This is an interesting idea as long as you focus on a specific market.
There are builders I love and respect (like Justin Jackson) but currently I'm not in their target market (podcast hosting). However, I was part back when Justin was publishing mostly material for SaaS founders, for example. I'd buy a book/course related to it just because it was from him.
So I think people do this thing to a natural degree as long as the creator focuses on one niche.
In theory, would the customer be getting access to every product the builder has developed AND every product the builder continues to develop moving forward? I think it would really difficult for this to gain much traction because surely people and/or companies just want to subscribe to a product they actually need as opposed to subscribing to a person who might hopefully build something that's useful for them...?
I see this as betting on a person and supporting their long journey while in return they get access to all their products based on certain terms - Free/discounted
Probably they can have different tiers ?
May be instead of thinking it as a replacement perhaps this could be another option on the user end where user have two choices Subscribe on builder or Subscribe on single product?
There's a one-man-agency trend, and I remember seeing someone offering subscription for unlimited agency-services. It was someone here on IH, I just can't remember who.
I think this is similar to what you meant.
You pay subscription to get access to a person's time and skill.
yeah it is kind of similar but this not a "services based subscription" rather it is about simply build products for that niche instead of building for specific clients.
So, OnlyFans for developers? ;)
Hahaha :))
OnlyFans for Entrepreneurs
I am gonna use that as the title :D
Microsoft always had multiple ways for license. For example, office can either be by person or by computer. It really depends on your use case. It's more for customer's sake than to generate more revenue.
Also, say if you pay for vs subscription, you get like unlimited access to most sw and some free credit for azure.
agreed it depends, I wanted to keep this question as open ended as possible :)
Gr8 example on Microsoft, didn't knew it. Gonna add to the list. Thanks!
I think you need to think about whats in it for the customer. If it is sponsorship do they need access to all the software (possible random and inapplicable) they make? If it is to make use of the tools then why would they want all and every product?
Maybe something here but need to answer those I think.
It is all about how they choose to pick their market and what products they build in their market so their subscribers gets the maximum value out of it. It is all about their offering :)
It is really interesting. I think people buy into a vision and a purpose (The Why) so if you can get that across I can def see this working!
