I think most Indie hackers are generalists.
If you had to order these three functions from which you are more capable of to least capable. How would you order them?
Mine would be (from most capable to least):
1.Coding
2.Design

10.Marketing
Working hard on getting Marketing up a few places.
I posted this as a Twitter poll for a bit of fun!
That’s awesome! Thanks!!

NA. Marketing
10 Marketing
Marketing, Sales and PRs are things I definitely struggle with.
My background is as a designer before I even thought about anything entrepreneurial, so that's definitely the strongest.
I have a lot to learn with both marketing and coding (currently focused more on marketing). My skills in those areas are decent, but I'm definitely stronger with the parts of coding and marketing that are more adjacent to design (frontend vs. backend, and conversion optimization vs. cold outreach).
I'd say
I'm a software developer so I'm more inclined to write code. Design has always been difficult for me, I think I have good taste but going from the idea to the actual design is hard.
Coding > Marketing > Design
...
I am the same as you:
Mine is
.
.
and design falls between 5 - 10 because sometimes I come up with pretty okish designs so 5 is for that and it falls mostly below okish.
#1. I am a WordPress developer so I'm glad to be able to code something up as I think of an idea.
#2. I am no designer, however, using front-end frameworks like Bootstrap etc, helps greatly to get a quick layout with basic design. The perfect place for a designer to see the idea and run with a design/re-design.
#3. Marketing is certainly my weak point. Would love to get some pointers on marketing.
FB retargeting ads.
Forum posting (on relevant forums relating to what I am building).
Building a mailing list etc.
I guess
Same order for me :)
Marketing/sales has always been the weakest for me, but slowly getting better.
Definitely struggle most when it comes to marketing.
So it's more 1. Coding , 2. Design , 3 . Marketing :D ?
Haha, correct :P
I really wish that I was a whole lot better at marketing. I'm fine at sales, but I think of marketing in terms of "generating awareness" and the thought of general awareness is both extremely exciting and extremely terrifying, to the extent that I feel as though the "extremely terrifying" part is what holds me back
There are days I'm delighted that coding is my strong point and days I'd love to invert that list!
And I would add a 4th which would be Selling. Selling would also be my number one because everything I've made so far, I have found it almost impossible to sell.
I'm not really a coder at all (though as a previous software tester I have a good enough understanding of tech/code and how it works) and have always gotten pleasure-ably distracted by all things community and marketing.
I'm learning design at the moment, I think it is important for a founder to have especially as there are more and more products. What makes you stand out is clean designs and good copywriting.
2 Design
3 Marketing
Actually marketing may be 15 or 20 for me...
Lol yup I’m the same! Thanks for the response @adlee83!
