What I've learned from advertising on Reddit

Hey folks,

As many of you know, you can get 100 buckaroonies of free ad credit on Reddit.
I have spent that poorly, but got the hang of it towards the end.

Disclaimer: I am new to ads & especially ads on Reddit

Here are a few tips:

1. Use the Automatic Ad creation feature and try 5 headlines / 5 media items.

An ad for the same product got between 1.141% to 0.235% CTR. So almost 5x the CTR!

Reddit seems to be quite good at optimizing for this & serving ads that perform better.

2. Start with a small budget

15$ over 3 days is enough to identify which ad performs better. Start with that and then make a new campaign with a higher budget where you use the ads that performed the best.

3. Narrow down audience

Following tip 1 & 2 - try to narrow down ads to a few subreddits that you know will be interested. That gave me the best CTR and then I could ad a few more communities once I knew which ads worked the best.

4. Give something for free

None of my ads that asked for something (sign up, download, feedback) have performed well on reddit.
The only ones that did were when I gave something for free. Perhaps that applies to my communities - although I wouldn't expect programmers to be that cheap.

Here's my result for $16.33 : 215 clicks @ $0.08 / click
