What makes a good promotional video (or content)?

Hey all!

I've realised I really need to put together a ~15sec promotional video of sorts to market my game but I've never actually put together any serious marketing content before so my question is.

  • What are the key points a promotional video should have?
  • I'd like to try my hand at putting it together myself so does anyone know any good accessible tools to put something together?
  • Feel free to post any videos or links you think do it well.

Thanks so much :)

I've made a few videos for games I've made, although non of them has become really popular, here is my experience on what works better:

    • Show the basic exciting features about your game.
    • Put music and audio effects that are already in the game.
    • Depending on the size of the game, try not to show everything the game has to offer. Users that see the video and want to try your game would expect more content than what the video showed.
    • A nice low-budget way to make a video is to record yourself playing, then edit it to only show the parts that you want to show.
    • Don't be afraid to experiment and try things others haven't. This is one of the biggest selling point of indie games.

Like any other form of creating, your first video is not going to be groundbreaking (most likely at least). But making your very first video is a massive step. Once you've passed that, every other video will be slightly better than the last, and at some point you'll be able to have a nice video that stands for itself.

I really like your point of playing sounds etc that are already in the game, a good way to get users to associate the game with a fun video 😊 I also think you raised a really good point about doing something totally out there, like we need to really stick out and seem interesting to get any sort of user interest! I have a few crazy ideas so looking forward to getting those out and I’ll definitely let you know how I get on and if I get any success! 💪 thank you for taking the time to post!!

Authenticity. Whenever I hear something that sounds forced or fake, I tune it out. I think most people are the same.

For a game, I'd just want to see the really cool features of the game. Maybe a reaction video of people playing for the first time if that fits the game.

This is literally gold @ryansneddon!! I totally get the if it feels like an ad I’m out! Good idea on the reaction video I’ve been seeing a lot of comments on getting user reactions, I guess it’s a good way for users to gauge how fun it is! Thanks for your comment I appreciate it a lot !! 😊

You should watch "Halt and Catch Fire" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2543312/. Look at ads from Apple in the 80s.

What you will learn is that the power is in the story. The problem is how do you get people to listen to your story?

First before the story you need a "hook" -- something that captures their attention. From there get so good at telling a compelling story that the user cannot resist.

Once they are moved by the narritive, then that is when you give them your offer.

I have been following this framework recently and it's been doing wonders. Over the past two days I have accelerated growth and closed $4k in sales.

Follow this framework and tell a story through video using https://storycreatorapp.com -- the idea is to keep the video simple, use nice colors, good fonts, and leverage cool clips/gifs. Put it all together in the tool and share it with me.

This is super impressive @storycreator! Those are some seriously good results!! Also love the way you’ve laid this out, feels like the skeleton for a holly wood movie! Haha I will definitely check the video out and bare in mind everything you’ve said! Great comment!!! 💥

There is a lot of game dev and marketing content on YouTube from GDC conference...

There is a lot about doing short gifs as marketing, they get a lot of social share

Make more of them rather than try to make "the one"

Hi ya @hatkyinc!! I like your idea of breaking it up, that actually makes a lot of sense! I feel like the more variety you have the better chance you have of appealing to different sets of users! Awesome tip thanks 😊

      Hey @StudioCinematic 👋
I think you've hit the nail on the head there with highlighting gameplay and not making it look like an "ad". Im definitely going to keep that in mind so thanks so much! Ahhh unfortunately i'm a Mac user, but I would have given it a go otherwise 😅
