What makes an affiliate program successful?

I don't have the experience but some companies are doing quite well like clickfunnel, bluehost, kinsta. IMO, you have to provide:
Regular newsletters to educate affiliates
Marketing sources like awards, promotional banners, logo, training videos, ebook, webinars, tutorial videos, sample reviews, etc
Allocate an aff manager to support affiliates
Provide case studies for reference
You can register other companies program to see what they are doing.

I think those 4 things are key and almost always necessary as a staple. The communication part is super important. We're building out an affiliate program at Savology, and I've realized that having a regular cadence of communication with our affiliates helps them keep us in their thoughts when they are creating content, etc. That includes monthly recaps on performance (compensation) but also any significant updates that we released on the product side which could be useful and valuable for their audience.
