What makes you pay for a newsletter?

Hi everyone. I’m working on building out a newsletter and blog and would like to understand what pushes you over the edge to actually subscribe to and pay for a newsletter?

I am playing around with a few monetization strategies and feel that the paid subscription model allows me to deliver the most value to my readers.

Thanks in advance for your input.

    Simple.

    • Is there original content that I cannot find anywhere else?
    • Is what I learn going to improve my efficiency & output at work / life?
    • Does it give me ideas on how to make money?
    • Do I think that reading this makes me a smarter and better person?

If I say yes to all of these, or multiple, I will be highly likely to pay for it.

There is only one that I am loyal to & that is https://daniellemorrill.substack.com/
because I am invested in her as a human. I consider her newsletter like training on how to think like her — good luck!

Hi, I can answer for why people buy my newsletter, Software Ideas. It has over 300 paid subscribers at this point, so hopefully my thoughts are useful to you!

Paid newsletters need to either be incredibly entertaining (very hard to do), or they need to solve an actual pain.

For Software Ideas, it helps founders who are actively looking for their next business to find and explore a ton of ideas before they land on the one that suits them best. It's like outsourced market research.

The newsletter part of it is irrelevant. If people get sick of getting written content in their inbox, then all the paid newsletters will switch to paid blogs, or whatever comes after that. Don't confuse the delivery method with the business model!
