What number do you track to show how well your product is doing?

Hey,

What's the key metric(s) you track to determine how well you're product is doing? If you're an open startup, please share a link to those metrics.

Also, feel free to drop a link to your product.

The comments on this post will form part of my newsletter, Indie Stories. Take a look.

We track several measures, and I have listed them here in order of importance. The last 3 can vary in importance depending on where our focus is at the current time. For example at the moment I am working on converting signups to trial so I am closely monitoring the Signups/Trials %.

    1. MRR: Growth indicator, the most important measure for us.
    2. Monthly Cash Income: varies based on annual subscriptions purchased, as we offer both monthly and annual subscriptions, plus we are now more than one year old so annuals are now starting to renew.
    3. Signups/Trials : % of signups who then actually start a trial.
    4. Total Signups: How many enter the funnel.
    5. Website visitors: How many visitors to our website.

do you also track any product usage metrics

      1. 2

Not at the moment, although it is on our roadmap. I think tracking usage would be useful to help us focus our marketing efforts on different segments.

As always we have finite time and at the moment we spend a lot of time helping/supporting customers, adding new features etc.

Our product is a one-time sale model (it's a design oriented logo generator).

    Our key metrics

    • number of people who look at the details of a logo proposal
    • number of people who add a logo to their cart
    • number of people who buy

It gives us a sense of which logo categories work best, and which ones we need to improve, even those which don't have much sales yet.

do you use any tool to track? have you considered adding wishlist

      1. 3

Initially we used mix panel because the UX is great. However their pricing model is suited for apps with fewer but more active users than us, it’s for apps not e-commerce. We switched to amplitude, and found it to be very powerful although a bit more “boring”.
Wishlist is among our top priorities yes, and will help a lot to identify engaged users. It’s also something people keep requesting, so will be beneficial in many ways 🙂

    Hey @hessel Love Fifty ;)

I'm currently tracking these numbers for Virtual Mojito:

    • number of new tools submission vs site traffic
    • number of new events submission vs site traffic
    • number of newsletter subscribers every 2 weeks
  5. 2
    1. customer interviews
    2. revenue (mrr)
    1. 2

The customers interviews is your first metric? Can you explain more?

      1. 2

yes. because without customers, i don't get #2.

  6. 2

    Primary : MRR, churn rate
Secondary : New signups, trial to paid conversion, number of active users

That's what we look at SEOwl

Totally depends on the product and it’s intended use. For a project management app I may track time per user per day. For an app I use to track my meds I may just make sure it’s opened once per day. A social app, how much is it being shared with new users...
