What project management software do you use and what do you hate about it?
Many of us are having a full time or part time job while hacking. I am currently in the software industry in a project where JIRA is used and often think: is this really the best thing we can use? JIRA started as a bug tracker and now it is thrown onto project management, with the attitude: If we use this, we are agile! But what it does not solve the cultural change and change of mind to achieve this, by far more important from my point of view.
There are plenty of other options from Trello to Asana to Meistertask to vanilla Excel. So what have you been using recently and is there anything you do not like about existing solutions?
I’m the only one using it, so take this with a grain of salt if you’re trying to collaborate with other people, but Trello is pretty much perfect for me. I have columns for Done, In Progress, To Do and Backlog (the former basically consisting of the highest priority items from the latter). I label cards Feature, Bug, Refactor, Developer or Marketing to keep track by category. I also use the hell out of the checklists, they’re a great QA tool.
Sounds like you are totally happy with Trello :-) Which tier are you using and why did you choose Trello over its competitors?
Free tier! Trello is super easy to use: their execution of the drag–and–drop Kanban concept is really slick and intuitive.
I also like that they don’t have a ton of features! I don’t need a list view, velocity graph, gantt chart or whatever else Jira/Asana/etc cram in there, and in fact having those features available gives me a bit of anxiety haha. Trello does exactly what I need and not much more.
I second trello. Stupid simple and easy to change as you figure out how to organize your stuff. I have project specific boards and a general todo. Helps a ton. In fact, before we had JIRA I used trello to run a team of 8 contributors at work with it. AWS product teams also share some of their roadmaps via trello. Your probably not going to do the most advanced stuff with it but it will save you from have tons of todo lists and sticky notes everywhere for sure.
I am really wondering why Trello is not copied more since its main feature seems to be the dashboard which is not so difficult to implement. What is Trellos USP, from your point of view? Are there any other special features you are using, e.g. like integrations to other systems?
I think the uniqueness came from its extremely easy to use and simple model of implementing todo + kanban (as free offering). On a personal level it was pretty attractive to my family because of the seamless mobile app + web experience. My wife and I would share lists and watch each other move stuff around. They nailed it. From a more enterprise perspective, we used it at the time because it was easier to get started and customize without the help of any other team. Once our kanban started to intermix with other teams it made sense to move to Jira to make use of Epics and more advanced work flows or issue types etc. Thats just my perspective. I think there are actually products replicating their success now. Look up “Monday” , “Breeze”, or “zoho kanban” for example.
I’ve actually never used any premium features of trello and never really had any compelling reason to at least as a consumer. Enterprise might be more open to that though.
