We just on-boarded a handful of new customers to ClipGain[https://clipgain.io/] and although ~50% of them tried the product immediately after sign up, and returned to try it again within the next 24 hours, they have not upgraded to paid plan yet.
I am not sure asking them to simply explain why they haven't been back for more is a good idea. How would you ask the same question, but in a more gentle way?
Also @kirill, I just listened to the demo on your landing page and man - that’s absolutely epic. You HAVE TO build the whole landing page around that example - push it up, maybe even all the way to the splash screen, lead people to play it... I don’t even care about the list of features you have there - I know it just sounds much much better after listening to it.
Updated the landing page. It doesn't look very sexy, but will watch and see if our conversion gets better. Those audio files are now right up at the top!
Perfect, thank you. That's exactly the feedback I've been hoping for!

I’d simply try to learn why they used your product in the first place, if it got their job done, how satisfied they were and if (and for what) they use other tools alongside of your tool.
The first part should give you more info about their satisfaction with your product (one factor for potential upgrade) and the second part should give you enough insights on what features your users expect. (another huge factor for potential upgrade)
I would avoid asking directly if they would upgrade and why yes or why not - people are usually very bad at answering such direct questions.
Yup. We've been on email chats with some, and called a few since this post. The satisfaction is high for most, but the feature set/integration does not quite work for their flow.
I take that feedback with some skepticism though. I imagine if the pain of bad audio was high enough for them, they'd find a way to work us into their flow. But currently value add isn't quite high to justify that. Maybe I'm wrong though, so we are adding some capabilities, and we'll see if those users convert.
I would not worry about conversion until you have 1000 WAU's. Build an audience. Build a user base that returns.
Before reaching this milestone you no real baseline data to optimize.
What would be the best/most efficient way to acquire 1000 WAU? @gator70
What is the free/trial plan?
We are in the podcast/audio space as well and have a similar model.
Yeah, asking why they didn't upgrade would be weird. I am usually most interested to hear if they completed the desired action and whether or not it worked as intended. If not, why?
Is it possible they got what they needed each time and didn't need to upgrade?
If they are willing to talk on the phone, that's def the best way to get the info. That will allow you to hear their reasoning and ask follow-up questions based on it.
ClipGain is the product. We run podcast audio through various filters and make it sounds ridiculously better. Traditional tools are rather complicated and eat up a lot of time, this does everything you need in one-click.
Is it possible they got what they needed each time and didn't need to upgrade?- Yes. Technically we give away enough free credits that you would not need to upgrade immediately. What I don't know for sure if they (a) tried and liked it, but waiting for next time they need it or (b) did not like it, and are not coming back. Will get them on the phone, indeed. It's hard to get to, but worth it. Thanks!
Those podcasters are DIY and uber resourceful (a compliment 😄) ... They get every ounce they can without paying.
Resourceful is good, indeed, but I suspect we should plan to price accordingly? Is that why Wavve skewed on the smaller side? I noticed you have two plans that are 10 and 30 minutes. I assume that's to get scrappy users to convert?
We had a hard time pricing it high enough to focus only on the top podcasters (plus, most of them outsource marketing and don't need us). So we priced it lower and focused on targeting the 80% instead of the 20%.
It could be very different for you all since the value prop is very different.
I will say the freemium model works really well for most podcasters. However, they probably will only use your product for each episode so it would be a week or few until they come back for round 2. Maybe you could allow them to upload the full episode but only ClipGain the first 20% so they can try it out?
Shoot me an email if you want to connect!
Thanks, that's great feedback. Will definitely connect over email!
How long have they been using the product?
The product is not designed to be used for a long time. It costs money to do this production for our clients, so we give them a taste of what's possible, but then would like to convert them into paying users, ideally within hours, at most days, after trial.
Are you saying that the product isn't meant to be literally used for a long period (i.e. user is logged in using it) or that the memberships are not meant to be long periods.
I would imagine that your customers need time to get used to the product being involved in their work, and hopefully eventually depend on it. I don't think a paradigm shift like that happens immediately, but that's just my take.
That's a good point. I forget that I am an eager adopter and will try anything that fill work for me, however new or clunky, but that's not the case for the majority. We should give them time to try it out and ask questions ...etc. I'll see how to ease them in, and hopefully provide enough time and value to convert over time. Thanks!
