Recently setup a development agency building digital products It's been a slow progress but I've learnt a lot along the way and we've grown to a team of 7 (actually found one our latest team members on IH doing his own exciting projects)
We currently have been targeting “Digital Agency” as an SEO keyword, but this means we keep getting a load more leads for digital marketing services whereas our passion is building tech products.
So my question is - how should we describe our studio?
And for any SEO experts, what keyword to target?
My inspiration has always been https://www.ustwo.com/ and love all the work they do. They bill themselves as a “digital product studio” but I’m unsure if entrepreneurs would search for this on Google.
Current site is https://www.crowdform.co.uk/
This will give you enough data to identify best keywords. You can then use one of many tools to check how many searches given keywords provide.
What you are asking is a rather advanced task (if you want it done properly), but if you will follow those steps, you will be able to get some idea on what direction take.
Thanks Bart - I'll give it go. I think worth doing now so we can implement all the changes in the new site when we launch it.
Hi Leo,
Love the sound of your agency. If it helps, I’d happily take a look at your competition and figure out some keywords for you. I run a SEO/PPC agency (although am looking to build my own products separately).
Bart is definitely on the money there with researching your competitors, that’s certainly where I would start. I would then look at what keywords they appear for and look at the common themes between them.
From there you can build up topics which can inform content for the site.
Also worth looking at your competitor backlinks to understand what kind of companies/blogs link to them and then figuring out the “worlds” (if you like) they occupy.
Hope that helps.
Peter
Thanks Peter for the guidance, want to drop me an email about your agency and can have a chat. leo[@]crowdform.co.uk
I would go with a name that's evoking some emotion and communicates your philosophy. Forget about SEO and keywords and try to capture what is it that separates you from all the other 100's of studios. if people remember your name when they meet you in meetups and such they will google it later and go directly to your site.
Quoting smarter naming experts than me (https://www.ahundredmonkeys.com/) .. "Use your name to fit in, and you'll spend your marketing budget trying to stand out"
Goodluck.
I completely agree Oron.
There's this company Herman Scheer who have the tagline —
"We Help Brands Make Love."
I personally don't like it and think its corny. But I've remembered it. It gives them an identity. They're not just another "agency".
Really like this "Use your name to fit in, and you’ll spend your marketing budget trying to stand out." I'll take a read.
There are so many studios out there offering similar services, none of which I think feel that accessible to a non tech founder. We are a "digital agency...", "product studio..." doesn't translate well outside of tech.
Is winning work via your website optimal?
I'd say that almost 90% of all my new biz dev in agencies was done by proactively getting out in front of people (the other 10% would have been doing that same thing digitally). Over 6 years we won hundreds of projects and had Google/Virgin as retained, won an SXSWi prize, peak turnover >£1m.
I'd be looking at anything that builds a new relationship or shows thought leadership - networking, referrals, cold calling, speaking at events, hack days, blogging, social media, PR - anything to start a conversation with a potential partner.
Thanks Warren - we do all that anyway and I agree most comes through word of mouth and personal connections.
Just interested to see if i can get the website working for us in that capacity too.
Good stuff! I do always wonder how effective it is having lots of people from the internet contacting you. Does it fill the sales funnel with good quality leads, or waste your time qualify trolls/low spend clients...
