What tactics do you use to get to know your industry and competitors?

What things do you do to keep an eye on and learn about your industry and competitors?

Some ideas to get going (ideas stolen from this tweet):

  • talk to their customers in person
  • stalkerish research - what would this exactly involve? @noahwbragg
  • SimilarWeb, SemRush & Ahrefs for traffic comparision - any other tools to do this?
  • In google: [Insert Competitor brand name] alternative
  • ask all my potential customers what channels work, and don't work for them
  • Owler, pitchbook and crunchbase are great sources to conduct competitor analysis.
  • be their customer 😳
  • make friends with them

What else?

I don't really worry about competitors at all.

To me, they're like my partner's exes...

If at any point I need to know about them, then I've almost certainly got bigger problems of my own to worry about! 😅

I agree. Focus on the customer, not the competitor!

I like asking my current customers “which software program do you hate using the most?” This helps me see if there is any opportunity in expanding vertically.

Yes people really love Tukios, probably the best tech company in the industry. Most of the frustrations come from the accounting software, and the case management systems(CRM).

You definitely made the right choice not pursuing your idea. The funeral industry is so hard to sell tech in. None of your typical
sales strategies work in the industry. It’s an old boys club, and you really need to get in to sell your stuff. It doesn’t even matter how good your software is, it’s all about being in the know.

I’m curious to know if you had a plan on how to create the slideshows? Because I recently pushed out a new feature with a 20 second intro clip that showed who the service was for, date etc.... And that simple feature took me an insane amount of effort to create! I can’t imagine how long it would take to write a full blown customizable slideshow software.

Yep ffmpeg is pretty much the only video editing tool that is used. Man it’s so hard to use! I actually wrote a little tool to write ffmpeg commands for text generation. Feel free to use it if you ever pursuit a video idea. http://ffmpeg.shanewhite.co/

Stalkerish research was really just a funny way of putting really researching them well. Understand how they work and why they do the things they do.

I did this by talking to my competitors customers on the phone, emailing with them and talking to them in person. It was surprising how much info they were willing to share about them.

They would share what they were doing that they didn't like. What they did like. How much it would take for them to want to switch and all of that! Really helpful to hear!

Take the opportunity to learn from your Competitors!
