everyone talks about the first dollar like its just money. its not. its proof.
proof that: someone found your product, understood what it does, decided it was worth paying for, and completed the transaction.
each of those steps is a separate problem i havent solved yet.
finding: solved (kind of)
54 IH posts, 31 dev.to articles, a hacker news post. people see my stuff. but theyre mostly builders who find the story interesting, not salespeople who actually need agency contacts.
understanding: partially solved
the landing page explains the product. the free sample lets people verify quality before buying. but most visitors bounce before reading.
deciding to pay: unsolved
zero social proof. zero reviews. zero sales. every potential buyer would be the first. thats a huge trust barrier that no amount of content fixes.
completing the transaction: solved
gumroad handles payments. the checkout works. the file delivers instantly.
so the first dollar isnt about money. its about solving the trust problem for one person. everything else is already built.
