What to do when building first landing page?

I'm looking to put together a landing page for a new business.

What recommendations or resources do people have for building an effective landing page to test out a new business idea? Thanks!

This is straight from what I've learned from Justin Jackson (https://justinjackson.ca/). Every landing page has to answer these questions:

    1. Who is this for?
    2. How could their life be better?
    3. What obstacles stand in their way?
    4. How does your product help them overcome those obstacles?

With that in mind, follow these tips:

    PAGE BODY:

    1. The heading and subheading are the first thing people read. Make them count.

    2. Make the main heading an action sentence (i.e. use a strong verb). Without a primary action, headlines feel like generic descriptions.

    3. If possible, use a visual near the top (screenshot or video).

    4. List the benefits of your product (not features).

    5. Describe some of your features but not all of them.

    6. If possible, include some social proof (testimonials and that sort of thing).

    7. Call to action: Add a prominent button with the primary action you want people to take. Add it more than once: at the top, in the middle of the page, and at the bottom.

    FOOTER:

    1. Describe who is behind the project (a brief paragraph about yourself).

    2. Provide a way for people to contact you.

All in all, focus on the words. Communicate as clearly as possible what your product is about. Have some one else take a look at your page for feedback before publishing it.

    Hope this helps!

      This is great :-)

I would ad a few tips:

      1. Done is better than perfect -- don't let your ego go into making a perfect landing page. It's always super valuable to launch early and get your early users/visitors tell you what they really need / want.

It's great to make guesses but in the end, let the free market decide whether they like what you do or not.

      1. I would also add a chat (that's what we did for our SaaS), where you can capture the actual visitors comments / questions.

I always refer to others' work, so I'd recommend http://www.pages.xyz/type/product and dribbble.

BTW, I find it's popular to put a video of demonstration on the landing page, and you can do the recording with the QuickTime if you are using a Mac.

Thanks for the link, that is very useful.

I followed Julian Shapiro's guide on landing pages (https://www.julian.com/learn/growth/landing-pages) when building some for my project, and found it way helpful.

Copywriting matters! That's not to say you need to be the best writer in the world, but here's a few things DO make a big difference:

1 - Lead your landing page with your customers' pain. Be as vivid and specific as possible. Don't give them a chance to wonder, "Is this meant for me?"

2 - Take the ego out of it, and focus on them. Effective copywriting makes the reader/potential customer the "star" of the landing page, rather than talking about your product or yourself. Nobody cares about the features, they care about what pains those features are going to solve.

Even if your writing isn't great, if you get these two things you're going to see better results than clever quippy headlines.

If you want to share a draft of what you write for your landing page, I'd be happy to give it a look and help you improve it!

I would love to have insights as well :) I'm always struggling with copywriting. Do you mind?

Sure, share it here and hit me up (email is in my profile).

    Here you go Peter.
A video series explaining all the elements you need to create a landing page that converts: https://www.strikingly.com/how-to-build-a-landing-page-that-converts

Above all else that you need to concentrate on, the copy for the landing page is the most critical. Just an fyi. ;c>

Thanks! I will definitely start with that.

It's $39 but you'll find all up to date information about how to make a good landing page in The Landing Page Cookbook (I'm not affiliated it's just a good resource worth the price).

It will save you the time to look for all the data over various websites.

I have a "brief" with a dozen questions that I fill out (or make my clients do that in case I'm doing a landing for someone) and by the time you're done, you completely "see" how your landing should look like and understand the flow. Here's the drive link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fGuC7eXpGe2mIJkZ3fBA8rgjGBQ_R0DXaKJ_FBXx_dI/edit?usp=sharing - feel free to use it. I have similar briefs for different kinds of apps or web services.

Optimize your landing pages for each source. Mobile first. Load time matters. For example, if you are running AdWords read about AMP for AdWords it's a gamechanger https://searchengineland.com/adwords-amp-landing-pages-rolling-out-globally-282206

re: design - I wrote an article on Landing Page design tips here: https://onepagelove.com/10-landing-page-design-tips

re: effectiveness - my biggest advice is the user must feel you identified with their problem immediately. What would they want to read to be convinced to part ways with money or a lead.

easy to just put up a wordpress template. Onepage is a good template. Here's what I did to test if my idea was a good one:

Use free onepage template on wordpress
Add signup button via template and connect it to your email
apply to betalist.com - they'll tweet and email out your webpage

then the number of signups you get is a good indicator of validation. In total: would cost you only the amount for domain registration.

    Hey Peter,

It really depends on what you are doing right now.

1-Do you want to collect emails while you build the product /service?
2-Do you want to test out an MVP?
    3. Or you are past the MVP and need an effective landing page to convert customers right away?

    Resources for each:
1- Search of a service that lets you do a simple page with a newsletter CTA at the end
2- Use templates or simple web editors to make a simpler version of the product.
3- Hire an expert for this, I think it's only worth hiring at this moment as you are going to have the righ foundation to grow and get the best ROI

    Hope it helps ;)
