What todo app do you use?

Hi Indie Hackers,

I’ve not found a todo app or process that I love.

My first todo process was with text files that I saved on Dropbox so I can share between devices. I would use my code editor to view and edit my todos and format it as markdown. Searching was great, probably the fastest among the other products I’ve used. The todo list would always get unmanageable. I would manually have to move the completed todos to an archive and manage the active todos. I would eventually start the list over every year or even month.

At some point, I tried Basecamp. I used mostly as a project management tool, but their todo feature was pretty nice. You can sign dates to todos and filter the list for that day. I really liked it but it didn’t meet my company’s project management needs and it’s was too expensive to keep it as a todo app.

Next I moved on to Notion. As a wiki and team sharing tool, I love it, but as a todo app it’s lacking. I do like the ability to add code snippets and images, but I still have to manage my todo list each day.

Ideally, I want a todo app that can manage the lists, move done todos to an archive, fast search and shareable lists.

What do you use, do you love it and what features are missing if any?

    A. There are couple of fresh note taking tools that are pretty close to your initial solution, but provide more flexibility in terms of task management. Some examples:

    *You can add code snippets & images in both tools

    B. There are hundreds of SaaS tools (web/mobile) and modern desktop tools to manage your work, projects, tasks - from free and basic ones, like Google Keep or TaskBoard for Google Tasks, Trello or Asana for web or Things for your desktop/mobile, or even Todo.txt

    I use a notebook. Each two page fold is a day. The left side stays blank for notes, the right gets broken up into 10 boxes with a sharpie. Each box is a task for that day. I go as granular as possible and include personal tasks like “bike for 20 minutes”, “meditate”, etc. then I cross them off as I complete them.

    It’s a strange system but it really works for me.

    I actually use my calendar. Three companies, three volunteer positions at non-profits, all in one calendar, in a week view.

    I want to see what's up for next week, to-dos are color coded red for appointments and must-dos. Other colors for what they pertain to (a particular non-profit, personal, etc) When a task is not done I just drag it to a new date in the future, easy peasy lemon squeezy.

    This way I can see what I've accomplished in the past and when, and also see what I have coming up in the future. I have no idea why people separate their todo apps from their calendars, for me a calendar is the perfect tool.

      Unfortunately I generate too many todos throughout the day. Most can get done that day, some need a few days and others will never get done because it's not a priority. I need my calendar clean so I can see what meetings I have, but I'll keep this in mind to see if it can work.

    I have been using stock notes app for years. I tried Any.do which is also a good option.

      Stock notes app = Mac / iOS notes? And that is will check out any.do

        I was using iPhone before so, yes, iOS notes. It is actually almost 'perfect' for me. Now, I am back on android, I use its stock notes + Any.do.

    https://todoist.com has project sharing. However I'm much more interested in the struggling you are doing with Basecamp and Notion for team usage. I would love to discuss my product Uclusion with you on that front.
