What tools do you use to make a demo video?

Hi all!!

In the next month, I plan on making a demo video for my product. For someone that doesn't have any video editing skills, what tools would you recommend I use?

I figured it wouldn't hurt to learn some basic video editing skills, but I recently came across this tool on Product Hunt: https://glitterly.app/.

So now I'm also wondering if anyone has used other similar tools to make creating demo videos easier?

Feel free to share your demo videos as well! I'm doing a big learn on this and would love to see some examples that you're proud of!

Everything that I want to demo on my desktop, I'll just record with Quicktime on MacOS, then edit in iMovie or Final Cut Pro (pretty sure there are a lot more options on the video editing and I don't think it plays a huge role at all).

Came here to recommend exactly this. I went through quite the hunt some time ago to find the best solution and ultimately ended on this. The quality is great, it's easy to use, and if you only need basic editing, it's completely free with iMovie. The only downside I found was it took a number of takes to make the demo look good since is was solely using recordings and no animations or anything like that.

Good to know! What kind of editing do you do to your Quicktime recordings?

      1. 1

As little as possible. Just cutting out bad takes. I want my demo videos to be about the product, not about the video. I don't care about backgrounds or any fancy features. I'll do a minimal video that just explains really well what the product is, and that's all that I'm focusing on.

Just like a website, it can be really well done, but if the article is bad, nobody is going to pay attention to it no matter how nice the site is.

Ugh. Wish I had come across this post a couple weeks ago. I just made a demo video for Keysmith, it was a much bigger pain than I had anticipated.

I used Loom for screen recording. Best feature for me was that you can highlight mouse clicks in the video. Downside was I recorded everything at 720p, so if you put the video in full screen on a big monitor it looks kinda fuzzy :(. I'd still recommend Loom, just make sure you're recording at high quality.

I found speaking and timing all the mouse clicks and getting it all right in one take was more than I could manage, so I recorded audio separately (using QuickTime and an AKG Lyra mic).

Then I edited the audio and screen recording together with iMovie. I anti-recommend iMovie. I'm on a 2020 MacBook Pro with a 10th-gen processor and it was still super slow and often would just freeze up for ~10 seconds. (I've also got a 4k monitor plugged in though, so YMMV.)

My co-founder made the little animations at the beginning / end of the video using html / CSS and recorded that with a QuickTime screen recording. And he made the music using Garage Band.

You can see the demo video on our website, keysmith.app.

Hope that's helpful, good luck Darlene!

Hey Daniel! These are such helpful tips, thank you! Did you find having the AKG Lyra makes a difference?

Just watched your video. It's clean and easy to follow! Your voiceover sounds so professional to me lol. I'm somewhat afraid of what my voice will sound like...

I watched the video full screen on a 20" monitor. It was only fuzzy for the first 30 seconds. To be honest, I had initially forgot about your comment and attributed that to buffer though.

      1. 1

Hey, thanks for the positive feedback! The first time I recorded, my co-founder gave me feedback that my tone was a bit flat/monotonous, so I appreciate you saying that it sounds professional :).

And I hear ya on worrying about what your voice will sound like. Same here. Give it a shot, get feedback, repeat ¯\(ツ)/¯.

The mic definitely made a difference. I actually wanted to change a part after my roommate (whose mic I was using) moved out, so I tried recording on my laptop and with AirPods. The difference was really obvious when I played it back and I decided not to include it.

Btw, in case you're not already planning to do so, I'd definitely recommend making a script. That helped me discover a structure to the video (show 3 examples, then show how I made each one), and then I could put different features I wanted to include in each part without making any one part too long.

        1. 1

Good to know. Sounds like I'll need to find a mic to borrow!

Oh yes - a script is a must. Thanks for checking! Using a script will also help me avoid filler words lol

    I use https://screencast-o-matic.com/
It has all the tools needed for screencast, editing, focusing, etc
And a great price as well.

Thanks! I realize I came across this tool a while back and forgot about it.

Have you heard about kite video? I cannot post link, but it looks f*cking awesome — apple-like product demos using just one app!

I want to make something like Framer do with their product updates — could anyone suggest more tools to try there?

We acquired a couple of hundred users through a simple loom video recording of our UX.

    Loom's great tbh

Wow that's great! Going to have to check out your video now.

I use Filmora 9. I have the pro membership which removes branding. It works pretty well for my needs.

      Thanks for the rec!

Uclusion uses TechSmith Camtasia, under Windows. It's not super easy to use but seems to be fairly powerful.

    https://storycreatorapp.com/

This product has come onto my radar recently looks like it could be up your street.

Thanks for sending this my way!

I am on Windows, I use OBS Studio for longer videos and Screen2GIF for short gifs. I do the editing in DaVinci Resolve.

Seems like DaVinci has come up in the comments here. Will have to try it out. Thanks for sharing, Cristian!

I'm building MockRocket.io, which helps make professional looking product videos. You can drag and drop a screen capture of your app and display it on the screen of a photorealistic 3D phone, laptop, or tablet. Then you can easily pan, zoom and rotate around to focus on different parts of the screen capture at different points–no editing experience required. If you want you can also adjust settings like lighting, depth of field, and reflections, but it's set up to look great out of the box, and is loaded with templates you can use as a starting point.

Down the road a bit you'll be able to edit a full product video in MockRocket–combine multiple shots, add music, text, etc.

I'll be opening it up for beta users in a few weeks, if you want to try it out, let me know!

    1. 1

      Ooh, MockRocket looks super nice!

A small bit of landing page feedback - I'm building a Mac app (Keysmith) and would love to show it on a laptop.

From the landing page, I thought it was for phones only. I only knew it supports laptops cause you mentioned it in your comment here.

Signed up for the beta :).

      1. 1

Great point, that was just a really quick landing page, but I should really put some more time into it now.

Thanks for signing up! I plan to have at least a MacBook Pro, iMac, and probably an XDR display. If you have any specific models you'd like feel free to let me know!

        1. 1

MBP is perfect for me. Looking forward to trying it out!

PS - I used to work at HubSpot too! Small world :)

    2. 1

Super cool! I can see the pan, zoom, and rotate features potentially coming in handy for my use case.

Would be happy to be a beta user!

      1. 1

Awesome! You can click "Get early access" on the landing page it will take you to the Product Hunt upcoming page where you can add your email, then I'll be in touch in few weeks with beta instructions!

I use Capto for screen recording (I get the app via Setapp which is pretty great if you have a Mac).

For audio recording, I use Audacity which feels old but works well.

For video editing, I am trying to advance my skills from iMove to something more advanced. I got DaVinci Resolve and am still going through the learning curve, but am getting the hang of it. Plus, it's free. Which seems crazy since it has a ton of features.

I recorded this video and published yesterday - https://youtu.be/kkl3X49uNoA. I still have a long way to go before getting good at this... 😂

    1. 1

+1 for Davinci. Easily the best free bit of software for editing 👌

    2. 1

Just checked out your video! I noticed there wasn't any background noise! Is that because of the audio recording tool or from the editing process?

      1. 1

DaVinci Resolve does have a way to lower background noise; but, I just made sure there was no background noise and am using a Blue Yeti microphone with a pop filter. Though, I don't know that I'd recommend a Yeti as I've read reviews that they pick up a lot more noise than other mics on the market.

        1. 1

Hmmm ya. I may be holding off on a microphone for now until I really feel the pain of needing one lol. Definitely will test with Davinci! Appreciate the tips

Loom (https://www.loom.com) is really nice for this too

    1. 1

Thanks for sharing! Is there anything in particular you you find most valuable with Loom?

      1. 2

100% what @cowllin said. The basics are free, easy to setup, and the face + screen recording makes the videos feel a little more personal.

      2. 2

Also huge +1 for Loom. I like the simplicity of recording with my own video in lower left. Free to use if only using for a demo video. It's what we use on our features/product page and it receives good feedback.
