I keep seeing two main styles of SaaS explainer videos:
A UI animation with text overlays and a voiceover (like those Apple-style product ads)
A founder screen recording casually walking through the product
I’m working on my first explainer video for my SaaS and going with option 1 animated UI, voiceover via Eleven Labs, and a polished storyboard for my animator.
It’s taking a lot longer than just doing a Loom walk-through, so I wanted to ask:
👉 Has anyone A/B tested these two video types?
👉 Which one actually converted better for you?
I’m all about doing what works, not just what looks fancy but I also want to make a strong first impression. Would love to hear from anyone who’s tested this or has insights.
This is a great question and honestly one of the most misunderstood decisions in SaaS.
From what I’ve seen, it’s not really UI animation vs founder screen recording — they serve different roles in the funnel.
Screen recordings usually perform better early on because they feel authentic and are fast to produce. For early-stage SaaS, they often build more trust and help validate messaging quickly.
UI animation, on the other hand, tends to perform better once you understand your positioning. It allows you to control the narrative, highlight key flows, and communicate value much faster and cleaner.
The real leverage comes from combining both:
Screen recording → validate message and use cases
UI animation → scale and optimize conversion on landing pages
In many cases, teams start with a simple Loom-style walkthrough and then evolve it into a structured explainer once they know what resonates.
The biggest factor isn’t the format though — it’s clarity. If the video communicates the core value in the first 10–15 seconds, it will outperform a more polished but unclear version.
That’s why more SaaS-focused teams treat explainer videos as part of the conversion funnel, not just a design asset. Studios like Moodive seem to lean into that approach, focusing on structure and messaging rather than just visuals.
