As a team working on a subscription billing platform, we’re constantly surrounded by numbers—MRR, ARR, churn, expansion, CAC, LTV... you name it.
But what we realized early on is this: Most founders track metrics too late or don’t fully understand which ones shape long-term growth.
We’ve made that mistake too. Early on, we focused mostly on acquisition, celebrating new signups without a clear sense of what retention or revenue quality looked like.
Eventually, we got serious about metrics. And it changed everything.
Here are the key ones we now treat as non-negotiable for any SaaS trying to scale sustainably:
Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR): Obvious, yes—but we learned the importance of segmenting it: new MRR, expansion MRR, and churned MRR.
Net Revenue Retention (NRR): This tells you if your product is valuable enough for users to stick around—and even pay more over time.
Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV): When we started comparing this with CAC, our marketing decisions changed drastically.
Revenue Churn vs. Customer Churn: We were surprised to find that these don't always move together—losing a low-tier customer hurts less than losing a high-value one.
Lead-to-Customer Conversion: This helped us stop chasing vanity leads and start focusing on the channels that convert.
We’ve written a deep dive breaking down 10 core SaaS metrics and what they mean in practice—not just definitions, but how they guide product and revenue decisions.
Here’s that guide if you’re into this kind of stuff.
There’s no shortage of dashboards or metrics tools out there, but choosing the right metrics at the right stage of your journey is what helps you make better decisions.
If you’re just starting, obsessing over CLTV might be premature. But if you’re at $10K+ MRR and not tracking churn properly, that’s dangerous.
At Saaslogic, we’ve made it a mission to bake metric visibility into the billing layer itself—because data should be a byproduct of your operations, not another SaaS tool to add.
Which metrics do you track weekly?
What’s one metric you ignored early on that later proved critical?
Would love to hear what others are doing, especially if you're running a SaaS or a subscription-based product.
Such a solid breakdown...
Thanks a lot!
Hey, I can't access it, it says please try again 404 error.
Ah, sorry about that — looks like the link broke earlier. Just fixed it
Hello, great article. However, I am getting a 404 when trying to access your guide.
S.
Same thing happening.
Ahh, thanks for the heads-up — appreciate you pointing that out! The link had a hiccup, but it's fixed now. Should work fine here: https://saaslogic.io/subscription-library/revenue-metrics/what-are-the-most-important-saas-metrics-to-optimize-revenue?
Great insights, John! Totally agree that focusing on the right metrics at the right stage is a game-changer for SaaS growth.
From my experience building CompliAssistant — an AI-driven compliance assistant focused on HIPAA and other regulations for SMBs — we’ve found that tracking lead quality and time to first value is just as crucial as MRR and churn, especially in a highly regulated space.
For companies dealing with compliance, converting leads means helping them solve very specific, urgent pain points like avoiding costly fines or streamlining audits. So, measuring how quickly they get actionable guidance after signup has been a key success indicator for us.
Curious if anyone else in regulated industries tracks similar early-stage metrics? Would love to swap ideas!
If anyone wants to check out what we’re building, here’s the site: https://hipaaassistant.com — would appreciate any feedback from this great community!
Thanks for sharing, totally agree on lead quality and time to first value. Especially in compliance, solving a real pain fast is everything. Just checked out CompliAssistant—looks awesome. Would love to hear more about how you define that first “value moment”.
Thanks so much — really appreciate you checking it out!
For us, that first “value moment” typically happens when a user answers a few quick questions about their business and immediately gets a tailored compliance action plan. It’s that moment of: “Ah, this is exactly what I needed.”
We designed it to cut through the noise — no jargon, no long audits — just clear next steps so SMBs can move forward with confidence. Especially for busy founders or ops leads juggling a million things, clarity = value.
Would love to hear how others define or accelerate that moment in complex or regulated spaces. Also open to swapping notes if you're building something in the compliance, SaaS, or AI space!
