What We Learned When We Moved From Etsy to Our Own Online Store

For many handmade businesses, Etsy is an excellent place to start selling online. It provides access to shoppers looking for unique products.

As our business grew, we asked: Should we keep relying only on a marketplace, or build our own online store?

We decided to create our own store using what we learned from Etsy. The transition taught us that an independent website is about building a brand customers recognize, trust, and return to.

Etsy Was a Valuable Starting Point

Etsy helped us understand what customers wanted. We learned which products attracted attention, and which occasions inspired meaningful gifts.

Our lesson was simple: Don’t think of Etsy as something to leave behind. Think of it as part of your business journey.

Building Our Own Store Changed Our Brand

On a marketplace, your products appear alongside thousands of other sellers. With our own website, we could create a brand experience and explain who we are, why we make personalized products, and what makes our designs special.

Our online store, Aspera Design, gives us space to present personalized wooden keepsake boxes and custom gifts as part of one cohesive brand.

We also realized customers often buy more than an object. They may be buying a wedding keepsake, graduation gift, retirement gift, or memorial keepsake. The reason behind the gift can be just as important as the gift itself.

A Website Does Not Automatically Bring Customers

Launching a website is only the beginning. On a marketplace, shoppers are already searching for products. With your own website, you must give people reasons to visit.

That means focusing on SEO, social media, email marketing, content, product photography, customer reviews, seasonal promotions, and brand awareness.

A beautiful website is not enough if nobody knows it exists. Traffic can come from search, social media, referrals, email, and returning customers.

Tell the Story Behind the Product

Personalized products are connected to people and memories. They choose names, dates, messages, or engravings because the finished product has personal meaning.

Our website gave us more room to tell those stories and organize products around important occasions.

Instead of asking only, “What product are we selling?” we began asking, “What moment is this product helping someone celebrate or remember?”

Build Something You Own

Moving from Etsy to our own online store taught us that marketplaces and independent websites can serve different purposes. A marketplace can help customers discover you, while your website can help them get to know your brand.

For us, Aspera Design has become a place where personalized wooden gifts, keepsake boxes, and custom designs fit into a bigger story.

The transition brought more responsibility, but also more freedom. We can develop our identity and create the experience we want customers to have.

Most importantly, the lessons learned on Etsy can become the foundation for something bigger: a business built around your own brand that customers can return to again and again.

The transition to an owned store works best when Etsy remains a demand source rather than a switch you flip. I would keep the marketplace listings as discovery, then use the owned site to capture email and segment by occasion, with post-purchase follow-up tied to weddings, graduations, or memorial gifts. That creates a repeatable audience instead of paying to rediscover the same customer.
