What will be the incentive to publishers with AI hitting search soon?

Hey Fellows,

With AI hitting search engines like google very soon, this industry is expecting a turn on it's head I believe.. (publishers,SEO, PPC, etc)

I really wonder what would be the incentive for publishers/writers/artists to keep writing or creating content websites or news platforms where people will just ask the chat bot and the answer will be given back right away?

Seriously looking for your take on this, What would be your incentive to write a piece of content that you know will be consumed by some AI engine and will just answer people's questions based on your content without the requiring them to visit your sites?

@XanderTan said on another IH post "future the news/article ..... will be tailored made for myself, it will be different from yours. -- That would be ideal!

Perhaps publishers(content writers) will no longer need SEO. They can submit to NLP engine directly for consumption. Chatgpt sets a new standard and method of discoverability.

    • For me its like WOM. Chatgpt is in my trusted group of friends. Google is not. And google gives the world/me alot of FREE stuff e.g. gmail. Still google, is not trusted.
    • Private chatgpt will start to appear. My own personal chatgpt with my own desired ebooks, trusted content. Or my community chatgpt. Gatekeeping of content will be new art and TrustPilot is one of the few that have attempted to do this on mass.

Content will revert back to quality over quantity. Internet has been afflicted with quantity, low quality for a long time.

    • Long-form articles to gain the original context, will remain, but likely reduced. Perhaps articles shift to a different digest setting (blog to a trusted platform) . News was once a trusted platform and it has not been replaced.
    • Editorials, Investigative Journalism - specific style articles will remain
    • Google search, SEO will decline. Use of chatgpt plus subscription provides distraction free and more enjoyable experience. Paying for open source is far more enjoyable than paying for a SEO machine.

If google/alphabet had launched openAI back when they had it, 5 years ago... they would have had a chance to stay leaders. They were not true to their founders and protected their cash cow. Open source is the way forward.

I agree that, with AI, content creator will revert back to quality over quantity. It is not impossible for AI service provider to have a sustainable business model to charge readers through paid subscription or advertisement and pay content creators. This is the same logic as how Youtube is working today, in fact, it is a positive change to written content creator, especially individuals.

On the other hand, I also believe that news web or apps will remain, because this will be the top of the funnel for readers to browse topics, then follow-up with further actions by searching detail with AI, instead of Google Search (unfortunately). Nevertheless, as of today, I still prefer Google Search, because it will give me pictures, videos and more context. However, extrapolating what the AI can do today, I think the AI will catch up pretty soon.

I feel like it'll replace short-form answers (the birthday & hometown of your favorite celebrity). It might even do well with reviews too (xyz product highlights of 2023). But if you want in-depth reviews or human creative insight on anything, those blogs will still be of value. Pretty scummy of Google to punish the creators that are the main reason their AI can grab this knowledge

I have tried youChat for some searches and it gave me quite good answers to start with. I still need to check the sources if I need to know the full picture but for the quick ones I didn't need to open the links at all.

But the thing is that it also selects the sources for me.

AI in search will delver answers so fast, viewing a domain web page to read the content may be moot. If the consumer will take this route, how will content marketing work anymore? And without content marketing, AD revenues will collapse.

Google won’t let that happen because that is their revenue

That's exactly what I am thinking about ..

We know the Large Language Models (LLMs) are deep learning models trained to understand and generate natural language, sometimes deliver inaccurate results. BUT whos to say some web page content is equally inaccurate.

Watch for fake news propagated by Google money to bad talk AI search. They want to scare the public that the Bing search engine with chatGPT will be dangerous, and offer incorrect results.

I read an article yesterday about Google's Brad announcement, they explicitly mentioned that there will be an impact to publishers

Yes, have seen the news .. I am speculating this is part of the reason why google was late to introduce these features in the first place.
