What worked and what didn't - Sunday PH launch with zero email list

Yesterday I launched VC Deal Flow Signal on Product Hunt. No email list (1 real subscriber), anonymous handle, Sunday launch (lower volume, fewer competitors).

Final result: #235 of the day, 1 votes, 0 comments.

Here's what I tried, what worked, what didn't, all numbers honest.

WHAT WORKED

  • Cross-PH commenting on other launches: drafted thoughtful comments on 19 other products. Drove ~10 profile clicks → 1 upvotes. Highest ROI move of the day.
  • Twitter cold DMs to a 50-name hit list filtered by recent tweets about deal flow / dev tools / MCP. ~12% reply rate. [0 votes attributed.
  • Discord blitz (Cursor, MCP Community, Vercel forum): 0 votes from technical audiences who got the MCP server angle.
  • Real-time leaderboard tweets every 90 min ("voter #50", "top 10 push"): each tweet drove 15 new clicks.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK

  • Telegram: 1 subscriber, instant skip
  • Email blast: 1 real subscriber after filtering testers/bots, instant skip
  • Show HN today: deferred (25 karma + Sunday flag risk)
  • "Upvoter mining" tactic from old PH playbooks: PH removed public upvoter lists in 2022. Whole strategy structurally dead.

WHAT I'D DO DIFFERENTLY

  • Spend more pre-launch time on cross-PH commenting (build profile recognition over 2-3 weeks)
  • Build a real email list earlier — not as a launch tool but as a feedback loop
  • Skip Telegram entirely until the channel has >100 subs (you can't shortcut audience)

Numbers behind every claim are in the comment thread on the PH listing if anyone wants to dig. Happy to share what didn't make it into this post — DMs open.

Solo, anonymous, 11 days into building distribution. Long way to go.

Really valuable post-mortem. The 'zero email list' launch is such a common situation for solo founders and the honest breakdown here is rare.

The insight about community engagement vs. cold traffic is spot on. What I'd add: without a list, your CRM becomes even more critical. Every person who engages needs to be tracked and nurtured manually - but most solos are running this in scattered notes or spreadsheets.

I'm building a Solopreneur Notion OS to solve exactly that - a linked system (CRM, project tracker, revenue dashboard, decisions log) so nothing from launch week disappears. Would love to know what you used to track outreach during the launch.

This is super real — especially calling out what didn’t work. Most people hide that part.

The cross-PH commenting insight is interesting.
Feels like it’s less about “traffic” and more about building micro-recognition inside the platform before you ask for anything.

Also, your result kind of proves something important:
    → distribution isn’t a launch problem, it’s a pre-launch asset problem
If the audience isn’t there before, launch day can’t create it from zero.

    One thing I’d test next:
→ turn those Twitter DMs (12% replies is solid) into ongoing conversations, not just launch asks
That could compound much more than one-day pushes.

Also feels like your product might land better with:
→ VCs / founders actively sourcing deals (less “dev tool”, more “decision edge”)

Also, I’m running a small project (Tokyo Lore) where we test products with a focused group of builders and see how they actually respond (not just launch spikes, but real usage + feedback loops).

Since you’re early in distribution and already tracking what works/doesn’t, this could be a strong fit to validate where real pull exists.

Happy to share more if you’re curious 👍

The "pre-launch asset problem" framing is exactly right - you can't manufacture an audience on launch day, you can only deploy one you already built. The Twitter DM point is also good; 12% reply rate on cold outreach is worth converting into conversations, not just burning on one ask. On the positioning - VC/founder sourcing angle is the direction I'm already moving. Re: Tokyo Lore, happy to hear more.

Thanks for sharing the insight! We launch Wed and may be in the same boat as you. Trying to get the word out there but we are new and don't have a lot of followers yet.

Good luck Wednesday. One concrete thing: start cross-commenting on other PH launches now - today, tomorrow. Not for karma, just to get your avatar visible to the same people who'll see your listing. It was my highest-ROI move. Even 10 thoughtful comments before launch day compounds.

Thanks for the insight! A lot of work across many social mediums!

Yeah, spreads thin fast. I'd pick one or two and go deep rather than skimming all of them. For PH specifically the comment-before-launch thing takes maybe 20 minutes a day - low lift, decent return.
