What would you want in a welcome kit when starting a new remote position?
I'm doing some preliminary research on what people need when starting a remote position. Branded t-shirts and socks are great, but other than that, what are some things that enhance your home office to help you be successful?
Nice question! I've been a remote worker for 6 years and have dipped in and out of teams who have offered anything from laptop stands and keyboards to guitar straps!
I think it's so hard to know what a person has/might want if you don't know them well so perhaps just an amazon voucher for them to buy any gear they need? If they don't need gear they can use it for hobbies.
Aside from that you can't go wrong with a branded mug for all the coffee they'll need!
That's what I'm wrestling with. A lot of companies (including my own) simply let employees expense what they need, which gives them the ability to pick what they want and expense through something like expensify. If I were to get a kit, I likely already have some items if I've been previously working remote.
If I give employees the ability to "build their own kit", that's basically the same as online shopping then expensing those items.
I think it comes down to the items themselves. What do employees get in an office that they don't working from home? Does it come down to paper goods? Do remote employees even need paper? I certainly don't need paper goods, but it would have been nice to get some as a "starter kit" from my employer. What do you think?

in perhaps a slightly different vein, if I were to work remote for a company, I'd want to be able to show that off without necessarily wearing a shirt/socks each time I go out and about (working from a coffee shop, for example). Personally I think something I could add to my backpack or a company branded laptop sleeve/case would be another subtle way to show some pride while out and about.
Definitely! I like the subtle stuff as well. Aside from swag, is there anything you could think of that you would need to purchase when starting a remote job?
Hey, I think for me it would be lovely to have a team picture (preferably with me) to remind myself of who I am doing this with + why we are doing this :) (It could be printed or virtual)

Great thought. Software subscriptions typically happen within the respective software. You sign up for a "team" account and just add team members. Or, you'll just subscribe to them yourself and expense them (if your employer lets you expense them).
