What's one thing you know about marketing that you think others might not know?

I will start:

It's not what you sell that matters as much as how you sell it.

The only people who care about advertising are the people who work in advertising.

So true. Also, advertising brings in customers, but word-of-mouth brings in the best customers.

      1. 1

This is great. Do you have an active affiliate program to get word of mouth or how is it encouraged?

If you are a founder, you are a storyteller.

    1. 1

100% this. You are a storyteller in every area, from attracting the attention of customers or investors to growing an audience for your company on Twitter or your blog.

People don't follow companies, people follow people.

THIS. Dam, I wish someone had said that to me before. In a world of GP-3 and AI, people know when they are interacting with a person vs. a computer. And they ALWAYS prefer a person. If your competitors aren't adding a personal touch to their brand, they will feel the impact.

You can get ahead just be being an honest, real, person.

    2. 3

Exactly. Don't hide behind your corporate avatar. Have the courage to put your face and take responsibility. You will piss some people off but you will attract true fans along the way.

    Don't sell. Tell a story.

Tell a story about how you solved your own problem with your product.

Tell a story about how your customers' lives became better thanks to your solution.

This builds more authenticity around yourself and your company. People are more likely to follow you, engage with you, or try your product with this approach.

To be fair, it's more than an approach - you have to internalise this deeply. It should be a mindset.

Strategy is a force multiplier. If you are not playing with a strategy, you are practically trying to run with your two legs tied together.

  6. 6

Marketing talk usually repels users. Authenticity is king.

We're all just making it up as we go along.

(also applies to life in general)

The key to being consistent at marketing is scheduling tasks. And then making sure you complete those tasks by the deadline you set.

Growth marketing is BS. There are no silver-bullets to attention and willingness to buy. 90% of growth stems for the actual need and sustainable distribution channels.

    1. 3

I mean, yeah... but growth marketing is definitely helpful.

There is no silver bullet, true. And it's BS that people pretend that there is a silver bullet just to make some money. But having some tactics in your tool belt... that's just smart.
