What's something you believed about startups that turned out to be completely wrong?
Mine:
I thought building the product would be the hardest part.
Turns out there are dozens of hard parts:
finding users,
getting feedback,
positioning,
distribution,
retention,
and staying motivated when nobody seems to care.
Building was only the beginning.

I agree, especially as a non-technical founder I was terrified of the build when I realised I couldn't afford to hire someone. But turned out it wasn't too bad. My issue now is distribution, how to get an audience is driving me mad.
I haven't had a motivation issue but I definitely feel let down when friends and family don't care about the thing you've built and are proud of.

I can relate to that. Building turned out to be much less intimidating than I expected, but distribution has been a completely different challenge.
And yes, the friends and family part is surprisingly tough. You spend months thinking about something every day, so it's easy to assume others will be excited too. Most people are busy with their own lives.
I've learned that strangers who have the problem you're solving often become much more engaged than people who know you personally.
