What's the best thing to do with unused domains?

I have a bunch of unused domain names, with nothing on it. The classic "I have an idea > a name > a domain name... and that's all folks"

I always wondered what to do with it - for some weird reason I want to keep them.

Park them?
Try to resell them?
Install a wordpress with a bit of content, because it's easier/helps make a few more bucks in case I can sell it?

For instance, I own "illdo.it" - I could just not renew it, but I feel I would be missing something here.

What should I do? Any thoughts?

Thank you!

What do you do with unused domains?
  1. Renew them year after year doing nothing
  2. Park them through a reseller
  3. Install a wordpress, create a bit of content
  4. Just let it go

I, too, have a bunch of domains. One of mine just sold on Sedo for $1900.00. It doesn't happen too often, but when it does, it's really nice!

    Good luck to you!

I sold one on godaddy last year. I listed and forgot about it, then got a notification that it sold for $1,000. A nice surprise!

I didn't know godaddy had a marketplace... Do you recommend?

My experience with GoDaddy auctions is that it tough to get attention for your domains unless they are really high quality. I tried listing several of my domains which were catching cyberdust. As of now, none of them have sold.

I also think it might be interesting to see whether you could use the domains to host a free tool relevant to the target audience of your main product. I remember reading somewhere that HubSpot has used this strategy to attract users to their app.

Yeah, it's worth a shot. Took a while for me but it was like USD $5 for the year. Here's a link: https://www.godaddy.com/auctions/domain-auctions

Any idea which site I should create?

I'd say create some content, but not on WordPress. WordPress requires quite some attention on updating, and every now and then it gets hacked nevertheless. I know of popsy (website from notion content), softr and odoo websites where your can host a website on your custom domain for free (with a little bit of non intrusive link/footer linking to popsy, softr or odoo).

And offer it on sedo for 100$ buy now. If somebody wants to buy, you can start an auction and others can bid higher. If nobody else bids, you have to sell it for 100$.

You can also put it on flippa and try to sell it

I started applying this new policy a few months ago:

No renewals for domains I didn't end up using.

Already let a few domains go, and it feels good.

Couldn't resist and broke my rule with one domain I liked too much.

One piece of advice specifically about .com domains:

If it's a decent one, keep it. I let one go a couple years ago and later someone who happens to be another indie hacker, had to buy it from a domain squatter, probably for a couple thousand bucks.

I normally let them expire and joke around in the WBE Space with the fact that I bought a new domain XD
