What's the best way to sell 4-6 different digital downloads on a site?
Hi Indiehackers:
I am developing a some audio products that I want to sell as digital downloads from a site (it's a side project). These are B2B products. They will be specialized downloads and priced significantly higher than traditional audio downloads on the itunes store for example. Also, they are not music so I don't want to sell them through sites that sell music primarily.
I won't have a lot of individual products, perhaps 4-6 in total. I thought it best to sell them through my own site. I was considering Shopify, as they apparently have an app extension for digital download sales, however I don't know whether 4-6 products is too small for a Shopify.
I need some advice on what would be the best way to proceed...
- set up a shopify shop for this
- use wordpress and woocommerce plugin (never used woocom b4)
- Some other method I am unaware of

I've purchased a couple of really high end digital products through Sellfy before. From what I understand, it's really straightforward to setup and get going.
I've used Wordpress + Plugins and Shopify before. Both have their pros/cons, but I'd steer clear of WP if at all possible. Yes you get a more granular control over your site, but the headaches outweigh the control, in my opinion.

I'd go for Shopify. Either the "Buy button" option or any of their more robust options. It's incredibly easy to manage.

No, you can't use your own domain, not at this moment. You can however embed the whole store or just the shopping cart on your website, if that works.

It looks like this can get rather expensive over and above the base cost - even basic needed features seem to be extra $$$
or Gumroad / Sellfy if you are interested in a hosted / sass solution
Although it may be cheaper for me to use a saas, as I see easydigitaldownloads can get quite expensive if you want to add other basic options like stripe or needed functionality.....
Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) increased their prices a lot since I started, but I didn’t come across a free solution that has good support and reliable updates. It is the cost of business. What I did when I started and didn’t want to spend money on a decent store, I just put a PayPal button on my site and sent the product manually after people paid. Worked quite ok and allowed me to pay for all the EDD extras when I set it up. It also confirmed my business model before putting too much work into it.
I think I may end up doing this at first too - dropping a paypal buy button onto a wordpress site until I sell enough downloads to subscribe to Sellfy or another service. Perhaps I should sign up for a saas in the beginning to avoid having to set up 2 sites instead of one site....
The problem I see is having to migrate everything to the SaaS when I am ready to do that. As well, it seems to me that many of these saas services are selling financial processing services too - since I already have my own paypal business account i don't really want to have to pay a saas extra points to use my own paypal account. I have to figure out how the saas service deal with that..
My products are quite interesting but there is nothing out there like them so I don't know how they will sell initially. Hmmmm.

What's the best between Gumroad, SendOwl & Plasso❓
Also if I make my custom one will it be cheaper ❓As the above companies take a cut, I think it might be cheaper but never tried anything like that, so an opinion would be great. Note that my projects zip file will be bigger like 50MB's of 10-15 files. Will custom one be cheap or should I use any of the above ❓

Edit2: It uses Stripe which is not available in my country so I think Gumroad, SendOwl or Custom one for me 😭

As far as I know (I haven't used it) Gumroad always takes a % – whereas Sendowl and Plasso have an option where you can pay a monthly fee and there's no % taken off. It depends on your volume which is best, but you can always move up through the plans as you grow.
Sendowl supports PayPal as a gateway so that might be an option for you, but Plasso only supports Stripe at the moment.
I'm sure a custom one could be cheaper... but then you've got to spend time developing and maintaining it yourself, whereas with these it's all done for you.

And what about gumroad.com? It wont be inside your website, but it will be much easier to set up.
Gumroad is awesome! And you can embed buy buttons / subscription buttons in your own website.
