I'm trying to get the word out about my new productivity app (QTR.AI), but as an engineering founder, marketing is challenging for me. I've been reading books about getting leads (for example, hormozi's book $100M leads), and most of them say you should test many variations of your headline.
My question is where do you test them without boring your audience? For example, posting a single poll to my IG followers with different headline options might be OK, but if I'm going to do it again and again to narrow in on the best headline, they're going to start ignoring my posts.
How do you test your headlines (landing page, ads, articles, etc)?
I wouldn't test by asking for peoples opinions, the answers will greatly mislead you.
What you need to do is to test by running the different ads and measuring which one works the best.
Where do you test?
Scroll Facebook and find an ad that's a scroll stopper. Make one like it.
You can also check in meta ads library and see ads similar to yours and sort them based on how long they first ran. It's safe to assume that an ad that has been running for like a year or two has a good ROAS. Get inspiration from them and find a starting point.
I'd say start with a stop-scrolling graphic without too much text that is clear about what you're offering. Catchy headlines are great, but be careful; vague ones ruin it. Clarity > cleverness
You can then know what works best by testing multiple variations. Don't believe what people "say" is the best or their gut feeling. Test, get data, and believe the data.
Hey Swami, the best way for you to test rapidly, specifically what Hormozi is talking about, would be with paid advertising. My recommendation would be FB/IG as it is likely the best bang for your buck. It will cost you some money though.
I would say set aside $1500 or so to test. Rule of thumb sample size for me is 100 clicks. In order to really get a clear answer though you need to be a bit scientific. Do true A/B tests with headlines as well as your LPs. So change only 1 variable for each. If you want to test headlines for your ad, you need to just change the headline. Seems simple but people get carried away with their ads and something like two different colored backgrounds can alter the result. Everything about the ad needs to stay the same with exception of just the headline.
You also need to learn how to properly set up A/B tests in FB ads. Should not be a problem for you as an engineer, but, you should watch a youtube video or two.
HOWEVER, my honest opinion (as a tech marketer for 6 years and have run about 10 waitlist campaigns) just run ads to your waitlist and get them to fill out a questionnaire after. You will feel the money is well spent collecting potential users and I promise you more than 75% of the users who fill out the email collector will complete the questions. There is something about waitlist FOMO that gets people to give you info.
It can just take some serious time and money to get conclusive results from headline tests on your FB ads. So within that questionnaire you can get them to rank headlines, say how much they would pay, etc. while also collecting the data from your FB paid tests.
You are also creating a little pool of users you can collect data from when you need it. Interviews, beta users, etc. One note: We get a really high % of people completing the questionnaire using typeform, it creates a really seamless experience.
I hope this helps!
I'm entering the same stage with my podcast. I will be testing with Facebook (Meta) ads. Reach out if you'd like to discuss.
