What's the difference between giving up and failing?
by
Lirian Ostrovica
Just very curious what's the opinion out there.
Probably should consider integrating "letting go" in the compare & contrast here :-)
There is no failure if there are learnings!
Yes, that's another flavour, good one!
Giving up is quitting the project without getting clear insights that it is not going to work.
Failure is sticking to the project without getting clear insights that is is going to work.
Anything that doesn't fit the above are either experiment or success.
Well said!
Giving up is when failing gets too hard. Everyone fails, and if you stop trying, then you are giving up.
A great and profound question. In my opinion: Giving up is not trying anything anymore. Failing is having tried but concluded it's just not worth it anymore to keep on trying.
In this interpretation, failing looks better than giving up, but that's not always the case.
Sometimes giving up, might be smarter..
Okay. It's up for interpretation!
Giving Up - easy instant relief with little or no learning benefit.
Failure - maximum effort without the desired result, though comes with learning to enhance the probability of future success.
Giving up is when you decide not to pursue your dreams and settle for the mediocre. Failure is when you don't give up but fall short of attaining your goals. Giving up is a decision. Failure is a result.
But many people would say that they gave up because they failed..
In my opinion "Giving up" means that you stop working on something, before you reach the desired outcome.
"Failing", on the other hand, is something natural, something every human must go through to grow and learn.
I'm thinking wouldn't they merge when someone gives up because of realization of failure?
Depends on your mindset.
If you fail and give up, you won't be successful.
If you fail and continue, you will be successful at a certain point.
"Giving up" you can control; "Failing" not completely.
"Giving up" is an internal fight (mental); "Failing" is an external fight (attractiveness of your output).
"Giving up" will, over time, reinforce who you are (in a bad way); "Failing" will build who you are (upwards).
Interesting definition!
They both have a bad stigma though, but failure is VERY useful, and giving up can be a VERY smart decision
I would still distinguish between "giving up" and "stopping" doing something.
Absolutely, in the general terms.
When referring to one endeavour though, I think they would mean the same, unless you pivot and start a new one. Only then, you would be "stopping" but not "giving up".
So under that definition, "giving up" is a good thing. The advice to "never give up" is often interpreted in ways that really don't help.
yes, and i'd say -- the advice is even poor advice; given that most of the time people are not even thinking about the real repercussions of X person continuing on a path that actually is not optimal or even good for that person. It's a lazy phrase a lot of the time.
