What's the earliest signal that tells you a user will actually stick around?

I've been thinking about how easy it is to get distracted by signup numbers.

A growing user count feels great, but I've found it doesn't necessarily tell you who's getting real value from the product. Some people sign up, explore for a few minutes, and never return. Others quietly solve a real problem on day one and become regular users.

The more I build, the more I think the first meaningful action matters more than the first visit.

For example, users who:

Try to complete a real task instead of just browsing.
Personalize the product to fit their workflow.
Return without being prompted.
Share their work or bring in a teammate.

Those behaviors seem much more valuable than metrics like page views or session duration.

I'm still figuring out which signals matter most, so I'm curious:

What's the earliest user behavior you've found that reliably predicts long-term retention?

    I like the idea of looking beyond signup numbers, but I have become a little cautious about treating any single behavior as an early predictor.

    The same action can come from very different motivations. A user might return because they are finding value, or because they are still trying to figure something out. On the surface, both look like a positive retention signal.

    What I have found more useful is asking what context sits behind the behavior. The behavior tells you what happened. The missing piece is often why it happened.

    For me, the strongest signals are usually the ones where behavior and user intent start pointing in the same direction.

      I completely agree. That's why I've become a little skeptical of treating any single event as a magic intent signal.

      A second session, a feature click, or even inviting a teammate can all mean different things depending on the user's situation.

      I've found the real value comes from looking at patterns rather than isolated actions. When multiple behaviors consistently point toward someone trying to solve a real problem, the picture becomes much clearer.

      Understanding why a user behaves a certain way is much harder than measuring what they did, but it's also where the most useful insights seem to come from.
