The stuff that's so incredibly obvious in hindsight. Why weren't we doing this two years ago?!.
For me it was repurposing my newsletter for LinkedIn / Instagram. Practically doubled the reach w/ minimal extra work.
I love the simple stuff. The obvious marketing you’re not doing is worth more than the exciting marketing you’re tempted by!
PS: I'm putting together an article on this. So hoping find a few great examples. Hope that's okay!
Cheers :)
An exit popup to collect email (and email drip campaign).
Cheers Romain. And yep. I think this is the big one!
Couldn't agree more... 30 min so setup tops and 2% of the website traffic jump in the loop (for me at least)
7.5% with our Exit Popup to receive a Free Taster.
I honestly find these Exit Popup Lame, but they're too damn efficient to miss.
Adding a "Click to share this on Twitter" button to the Thank You page after double opt-in to my newsletter (https://bloggingfordevs.com/thank-you/).
It's like a little lottery, sometimes you get people sharing who don't have many followers, sometimes a tweet like this alone leads to 50-100 new subscribers.
Edit: Related, I also added "Click to tweet" to the bottom of my newsletter, and to the final lesson in my email course. Given that I have a 30% opt-in rate from Twitter Mobile to Subscriber, it's like a dead obvious and simple loop that keeps the newsletter growing.
Monica! Love this. Will definitely include. And find some examples of people sharing! Your meta image is also GREAT! I think that's another example.
PS: Consistently impressed w/ your marketing!
Edit: I've just had a look through Twitter and found a load of people's tweets...
Is it possible to quantify this somehow? I feel that saying “several hundred” subscribers is pretty good. But I wonder if we could get more concrete?
Thanks Harry! You mean in terms of how many subscribers have been referred based on these simple calls to action to share on Twitter?
Yeah it's really difficult to attribute. What I could do is look at new subscribers in the last 30 days who came from a t.co URL besides ones that I shared personally (by looking at the shortening path, when available). This would indicate how many people came via Twitter by people besides me.
Is something like that what you have in mind?
Yes. Exactly that. That would be great (if you have time)
Ideally the number would include both “click to tweet” from thank-you page and from the bottom of your newsletter...
And perhaps give last 30 days... Or since you started it (if possible)
I imagine the exact analytics number will underestimate. Cause obviously people might sign up later after seeing it a few times...
I know you've got 6k subscribers now. So we could do it as % as well.
Obviously if you started this after 3k subscribers. It would be 100/3000 (for example) big thank you
Hey Harry! Curious to know what exactly you had to change when you repurposed your newsletter for LinkedIn and Twitter?
I use LinkedIn slideshows... So have to reformat quite a lot. Here's an example
For Twitter it's just turning the article into a thread. A bit less work.
Being honest. Goes a long way in life and marketing respectively.
Abandon cart drip email campaign.
Giving away a free info product via an exit intent prompt (or timed on mobile).
Totally agree. Cheers Mike. Re Abandon Cart Drip. Have you got an example? Real numbers ideally?
I've been using Rejoiner on one of my sites for a while (closed the business in Dec 2020), and had two primary abandon cart drip campaigns setup:
Carts under $75
(a) Can we help?
(b) First time purchase discount
(c) Did you know we had Free Shipping on orders $75+
(d) $5.99 Stash Drawer
Carts over $75
(a) Can we help?
(b) First time purchase discount
Here is an actual weekly snapshot summary from about a year ago:
20 Abandon carts
3 conversions
13% conversion rate
64 emails sent
55% open rate
16% click-through
----------------
The week prior to the above week
-----------------
29 Abandon carts
4 conversions
14% conversion rate
89 emails sent
55% open rate
17% click-through
Poked through about 8 additional weekly summary emails, and the highest conversion I found was 22%.
I closed my rejoiner account in Dec 2020 since I closed the business, so I don't have access to more recent stats.
As for why I closed the above business, it's a bit more involved to succinctly explain here in this thread, but if you'd like to hear more, would be happy to share it off line.
LMK if you have any other questions.
Optimising my sites for SEO
Hello, Harry!
I found out that on WhatsApp (WA) people would actually respond to a stranger once you've shown them that you in the same WA group with them.
They would put their guards down and listen to what you have to say. However, when you're messaging them for the first time and they have had no relations with you before, you should approach them as someone who has come to offer them value and network.
I usually join as much group as I can where I am guessing I could find my target audience and after a day or two of being active in there group. I would send each and every member a private message (a pitch).
In 200 people at least 150 replies back, positively. When they do, we talk, I let them know what I do and ask about them too. I sell a lot just by doing that because they start to trust me. And I deliver exactly.
Here's the kind of pitch I sell to them. All facts, no made up stories. It's important to come clean and true.
WA Networking Pitch
Hi, Good morning,
My name is Sal, I'm a Communications student at ABU, Zaria. I own an e-commerce website, Pop-a-Tag, where I sell stylish, good quality clothes on thrift.
I found that we are in the same WhatsApp group, Students' Summit, so I just thought - okay, let me reach out o and make friends...
I believe in building friendships through which value can be shared and taught. I'm passionate about marketing; ads, and selling online.
Well, hope you're having a great day. I will like you to save my contact and tell me your name so I can save yours too...
Also, can you tell me a little about yourself so that we can find a mutual ground to relate?
✌🏾
Interesting. thanks for this. and agree... cold outreach so much easier if you got something in common
Thanks! I'm learning from you, Harry.
Being a participant in online communities where your customers hang out, and having conversations with them!
Find places on the Internet or IRL where your users are already doing the action that you want done in your product. Funnel them into your service by offering similar value. I was able to do that with Craigslist users in the past.
Generally, creating flywheels, using other tools, platforms and communities to ride on their wave.
Clubhouse is the obvious example now.
Twitter is still great from a community perspective, there's some good examples of indie hackers posting here, us tweeting about them, then them coming back here to say we've tweeted about them. 🙃
Also, I've had success with riding the wave of LinkedIn in the past.
Also, it sounds incredibly simple, but have real conversations with your people.
Cheers Rosie! Haha Love the little Twitter loop!
For me, it was adding a welcome page and asking for email addresses at first run of my app (thanks @jimzarkadas !). I didn't think people would simply give their email since there's so much email harvesting nowadays.
Turns out I was wrong: Roughly 60%+ of people do give me their email. I did clearly explain what the email is for, and I don't share it with anyone else.
Having said that, I am really really sure this is just the tip of the iceberg for me. Advertising on reddit could be another thing, but I'm in infancy there, I still have a lot of things to tweak on that front.
:)
I found some pretty obvioius growth by simply DM'ing every one of my followers on Instagram. I believe this was more effective just because we slightly knew each other and my outreach didn't feel like blatant spam.
