Growing a Google Analytics alternative at plausible.io
Last week I also talked to a friend who promised she would help me with the marketing strategy for Plausible. I'm excited to see her recommendations on how I should grow it.
There are a lot of people searching for"Google Analytics alternative" and similar keywords, so the first thing I would do is to create a dedicated landing page to intercept that traffic!
I would also try contacting websites who are already ranking on page one with a comparative blog post to be included in the article.
Going off topic here, but yes, that's how I found you @ukutaht. Still on my trial though, and will likely check out one or two competitors (who I found the same way...).

Nice product Plausible. I don't need all those GA pages with detailed info, your product is simple and great.
However, I would rather pay for "insight" than "analytics". I mean by that smart alerts eg. "Twitter traffic spiking to article xyz since Jan 12" on which I could take action such as retweet or like. Twitter being just one example.
Good point. At the moment I'm working on getting the basic analytics right but I can see a smart alerting feature in the future.
Can I ask you about the choices that you have made to scale this? I work in the same domain, although we have built a custom solution on top of Matomo, and it doesn't vertically scale. We will have to scale it horizontally because Matomo is using MySQL database and not any event sourcing/big data solution.
At the moment, I'm just running a SQL database as well.
The tradeoff is that Plausible is open-source and if I keep the infrastructure simple (like Matomo has) I could let people self-host it as well.
However, I'm thinking about using more complex event-sourcing infrastructure so I can make it more cost-effective and scalable. If I go that route it won't be self-hostable, but maybe I could add a free tier.
Yep, seems like a lot of analytics software uses SQL databases. Thanks for the info!
I recently created a chord search tool that allows the users search through 5000 different chords.
To boost my SEO I've used Gatsby to create an individual page for each chord. This has already drove a bit of organic traffic to my website.

Note that when clicking the scale links from a chord it scrolls to the top? I expected it to take me to a different page.

Yes that functionality will be coming out today or tomorrow! There was an issue with the scale pages so i had to pull them out.

After heading up growth effort for 3 tech startups and working for venture builder. I sort of want to do something for fun and simple. So I've converted a hobby into a passion project to help people build cool slides.
This is how I build the brand from scratch:
1) what have you been doing recently to grow your product?
Regular content and contribution on Quora, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Instagram on a daily and weekly basis. Create freebies to attract, engage and maintain a community on Social media. It's been 4 months so far, achieved ~300 downloads and getting custom requests twice a week.
2) what has worked?
Quora and Instagram are a major referral source. Pretty satisfied with the download rate.
3) what hasn't worked?
I also spend time on Facebook, Twitter. However, couldn't reach and grow the audience I need.
4) what have you learned?
I'm spending 30-60 mins a day to create content, and contribute design depository. It's fun and making a small coffee-fund. Like the idea of having a main job and acquire knowledge aside.

Honestly, we've only done organic content at thegoodstartup.com, and we're starting to see search traffic for that! I truly believe it's the cheapest, long-lasting traffic source, but I'd love any other ideas as well. Love me some budget-free marketing plays
Handful of highly unique and customized landing pages is our main source of incoming traffic.
I would say content marketing is highly effective at boosting site credibility and ultimately our organic rankings.
