Today I submitted my product https://askgen.ie to more than 20 product directories, but I found dozens more sites I could submit to waiting for me!

There are various places where one can submit their products such as product hunt, angellist, hackernews, etc.
Depend on product and where the customer is.
If my product is helping entrepreneurs/indiehackers or b2b product I will use typical producthunt or indiehacker or product directories.
If they are not then I need to go to other place.
That why mastering how to find leads is very important and also tricky.
If you are selling a gym related AI product, yes putting in product hunt is great but if you can promote on subreddit related to workout or facebook group or local communities it will reach your potential long term customer.
The issue with promoting on product hunt etc, the people who will use the product use it not because they need to use it but because its cool product.
So you will have bunch of people trying the product but for wrong reason.
When you promote your product to the right people, people will use it for the right reason and easier for you to know the usefulness of your product. Launch product according to where the customers are.

Is Product Hunt worth it if you don't land the top 10 spots?
I don't think so.
For us, we tried to submit everywhere but the best traffic drivers so far are Futurepedia, Theresanaiforthat, and AIToolHunt. We're holding back on ProductHunt for now because we want to make sure our product's at its 100% shape before launching there, but we heard it's one of, if not the best place to launch at.
Don't fall into the trap of "not ready yet to launch". You have a new chance in 6 months, when you add things and make it 2.0. Launch again. Then launch again. it's the first pitfal of any founder: "not good enough to X or Y".

You paid for Futurepedia to submit?
No, we didn't. We listed for free. Theresanaiforthat on the other hand, is worth the penny. $100 to list forever. We submitted MailMaestro (https://www.maestrolabs.com/) on early April 2023, and up til now we're getting traffic from there.
When I submitted https://askgen.ie, I found out that Futurepedia charges for it
Ah weird, I don't ever recall that we paid for it, can't find any receipts from them as well. We must have joined before they started monetizing? Or idk, maybe I just don't remember paying for it.
