It CAN work, but you have to make sure it won't implode your business with long-tail expenses once the LTD value has been extracted by the customer.
It's a great way to jumpstart things, but it should be used with ABSOLUTE caution.
Yeah, this is what I'm always worried about with LTDs.
It seems like a great way to inject a little more easy cashflow into your balance sheet, but it's the tail risk that really spooks me.
I contemplated implementing it with one of my products, but backed away from it because of a concern around cloud storage costs potentially eating up all of the profits over time.
I think it's a model that can work really well for some products. But I think before you tackle anything like that you'd have to have a real handle on your CAC.
How do you define "success"? Typically, if the price of your lifetime deal equals or surpasses the average lifetime value of your customers, each LTD sale can be considered a success. Although there are some subtleties and exceptions, many business owners feel like they're offering a substantial discount, even if it might not be the case in reality.

Nothing wrong with LTDs so long as your LTD price > LTV.
"Pay once instead of month after month after month" is a very strong marketing message.
Even if that once costs you $300-500 (depending on the value your product brings).

What do you mean by "successful"? In general, if your lifetime deal price is at least equal to your customers' average lifetime value, every LTD sale is a good one. There are some nuances and exceptions here, but to many entrepreneurs it feels like giving a huge discount, while that's not necessarily the case.
I believe Piotr is asking whether anyone has successfully marketed LTD's without using one of the established platforms as their primary means of distribution
