What's your strategy for acquiring logos for your site?

As products grow, a goal for most is to begin "acquiring logos" for social validation on the product's website. I was wondering how everyone here approaches that. For example, do you simply reach out to select customers and ask to be able to use their logo on your site or is there a more formalized process?

This is a great idea, Ryan! As social proof greatly helps with credibility and also conversion.

As you said it, simply reach out to your selected early users and ask them to see if you can use their logo. Would add two things:

    • Reach out to the ones that are big supporter or super fan!
    • Start early as this will build over time with many logos or testimonials for your site

Also sometimes some sites also use "partner" logos and press logos (if there's any coverage) as well which can also help with credibility.

As a logo-maker website founder, I do think that some visitors often seen social proofs as fake reviews. But if the reviews is backed by links and credible brands, they can be beneficial instead.

So, in order to get one for your site, you need to do any of the following:

    • reach out to customers and ask for a review (sort out the best reviews!).
    • ask another website, brand, or company to collaborate and share their thoughts about your website. If they are pretty popular, make sure to prioritize their opinions.
    • check for a website that are willing to collaborate and share social badges for your site.

For open source software, can you add logos for which companies use your software to validate it?

I wouldn't know how to approach the folk, maybe my github star list and reach out.

The logos you see on sites that boast that they've been on cnn, wall street journal, etc. are often misleading at best, and unethical at worst. How do they justify that they've been in these publications and on these websites?

    Ads.

Some of these companies buy $100 worth of ads on cnn.com and all of a sudden, they feel as though they can put CNN's logo on their site because they've been 'featured on CNN'.
