What's your take on requiring an account before prospect can do anything?

Hi IHers!

I run a company called EditorNinja - editorninja.com - where we provide unlimited on-demand copy editing and proofreading services for a transparent monthly subscription.

Right now I am having everyone schedule a demo call with me to discuss their needs. We also have a single document option where someone can have us edit just one piece of content. We do have simple workflow software on the backend where work is delivered back to them.

I'm not seeing the conversions I'd like to see, so while I work on increasing qualified traffic to the site (we're low 4 figures of monthly traffic right now, the majority to a few blog posts) I am also working on conversions.

I was curious if any of you have tested having someone create a free account before they're able to do anything?

Right now current conversion flow is come to site -> do things -> schedule a demo.

Proposed new flow is come to site -> do things -> create free account -> pick which way they'd like to go (single document or subscription demo).

Thanks in advance for any learnings you can share!

I like the new flow. I think giving users the chance to see your product before creating an account is very valuable and lowers the barrier to entry. You can see research proving that for ecommerce sites too.
