When Intercom first started, what did they look like? Were they a paid product?

Curious about how Intercom got started and want to learn a thing or two from their playbook. Does anyone remember what Intercom first looked like when they launched? Did they price their product? If so, what were the features? Did they just have a chat plugin?

I recall using Intercom back in the early days about maybe 5 years ago, and yes, they were basically a pop up chat widget back then, but then they slowly built a whole messaging suite around it.

We've traversed several different systems in the meantime, even going back to them at one stage, but in the end, their pricing was just too ludicrous for a bootstrapped company like us to deal with.

Hey Devan, thanks for the comment. Mindblowing on how fast they grew & raised their prices ;).

Yes. To be honest, Intercom is still the favourite out of the 4 tools that we have tried here. Their functionality is unsurpassed, but their pricing is crazy for smaller bootstrapped startups. We were on their 'Startup' plan for 12 months which was fantastic value, but as soon as that expired, our pricing was going to jump up 5x so we had to reluctantly abandon.

They had fantastic functionality though - their concept of "a single user can belong to multiple companies" model suited our own model perfectly. Also, it was super easy to look at tickets on a 'per company' basis rather than a 'per user' basis which helped our team when dealing with organisational tickets. Their messaging platform was vastly superior to any other that we tried out, and they were bringing out great value add ons such as onboarding. We also used their drip emailing functionality to good effect.
