When’s the best time to invest in building a community you “own”?

When is the best time to start putting time and money into a software like Circle.so to build a community you own?

As you’re building it? As soon as you launch? After you’ve proven the concept?

I’m sure it depends on what niche you’re in but would love to hear your different perspectives.

We’re building a personal growth directory and recommendations affiliate site that has small but growing organic search traffic and planning a Product Hunt launch soon. It may be awhile before it’s profitable and wondering when it’s worth investing the time and money required to build a community versus FB groups, Slack, etc.

Seems like a great niche to build a community around and my partner and I are both passionate enough about it to engage fully, but don’t want to add bloat at an early stage if it isn’t truly helpful early on.

I would gain some traction in stuff first:

    • get that traffic up
    • build an email list
    • experiment with some community focused activities and see if there is appetite for stuff
    • get to know your people through email

All of these kind of things build up confidence and give more clarity for when you want to launch a community.

+1 one this workflow. it works. it's simple, and it's free.

Def makes sense. Thanks for sharing!

I agree with everything Rosie laid out and would add one more thing:

    • start first with something free [discord, slack, FB group...] and give yourself some time to really see & understand your [+ your community] specific needs & wishes

I've seen many people rationalize their needs and make a decision on day 1 and then realize day 90 [then day 365] that they'd need something completely different.
