When to NOT target a niche?

"Target a niche" feels like standard advice in the indie hacker / bootstrapper community— but my co-founder Karl and I are purposefully NOT targeting a niche with our product.

This video explains why we're not targeting a niche: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9fW5gLjl8s

What do you think about "general purpose vs niche"? Are there exceptions? Examples of indie hackers or bootstrappers who succeeded with general purpose tools?

    Hey Steve,

I'd say it depends on how much resources and time you can allocate to market and sell.

Some categories, you have to go general purpose as niche is "too niche" and there's not one ideal customer but of many different kinds.

But going for a niche, saves time and money/resources at the start to get that first client or the first customer.

Personally, I like to create focused landing pages for different niches and then I target the different customers for each. Whatever starts getting traction first, I improve on that and try to capture that demographic first and then go for the next one.

Thanks for sharing! Totally agree. Niche is a good way to get profitable quickly.

Out of curiosity: are you able to share an example of multiple landing pages?

Yeah I think the best and the most simplest example that I often use is of WebFlow. Just look at the 'Why Webflow' nav option: https://i.imgur.com/1x1yhs9.png

They just have 4 broad types of customer but you can absolutely drill it down even more and have many many landing pages (that you redirect traffic to from ads or other outreach).

Not everything has to be linked to from the main page either. Just simple footer links or through blog posts.
