Where did the developers go? Finding the right social network to connect with my audience
Hey all! Firstly I'd just like to say I've been a strong follower of IH for about 12 months now (amazing to see how big the community and site have grown!) and it's been an incredible hand-holding experience for me as I've been working on my own product (https://gamefeatured.com).
Anywho, I've been having a little issue lately where I'm trying to connect more closely with independent game developers online but I feel like my social reach is now adequate enough.
As I work another job full time it's hard to go attend the monthly local meetups so my online presence is my lifeline to keeping in the loop.
3-4 years ago Twitter was THE place to be for indie devs but as of lately there seems to be so much less activity going on (less people, less engagement).
I'm wondering, is this an issue due to:
a. The audience has moved on
b. Twitter's algorithm makes it harder to be seen nowadays
c. There's a better network for this now (reddit, instagram? etc)
d. Something else?

I was a part of the game dev hype on twitter around 2011-2013, it was an awesome time! 💪 For me, the reason I was part of it back then was that we believe we could create a unique mobile experiences and make a living of it.
But the market changed and became very dominated by the large mobile game companies, and felt we could not compete. So we pivoted away from game dev. I do still watch the community, and see that it's been shrinking a bit.
Hey Luke, I just recently signed up for https://dev.to/ and the community seems to be pretty active.
With regards to Twitter I use TweetDeck and have a few search columns on terms that relate to my business. I use that to engage with people that I might be able to help.
I'd also look on FB as I think there are a few groups quite active there.
Forgot to mention Reddit.
Thanks Sten, dev.to doesn't seem to capture the same area of development I'm after - though the Facebook group suggestions were useful!
If we answer in which platform we use everyday that will help @luke to get the answer :) . I have the same question in my mind.
A lot of them moved to Slack now. But the trend is slowly dying now I think. It seems that after all the turmoil in communities last few weeks, we are going to see some decentralization of communities.
Could be an interesting outcome. What are the platforms you see on that list?
Reddit, HN, IH, PH, GH, Mastodon, Steemit, boards to name the few.
+1 for Mastodon. This is my bet on the next major platform. Familiar to twitter users and decentralized.
This looks like an interesting one.. I don't think the social change will happen quickly for people but it's good to hear what others around here are already looking at.
