Where does everyone live & what's your lifestyle like?
Just left my steady job in NYC to travel & dip my toes into the indie hacker scene and try a few things to see if something sticks. Curious where everyone in this community is based out of and what your general lifestyle is like. (Digital nomad? Work from home?)
I live in Larnaca, Cyprus. I'm an oral surgeon so I spend my 9-5 taking out wisdom teeth but I then start coding, designing, marketing etc. I make a very comfortable living with my day job but it's indie hacking I truly love. No traveling and working, unfortunately.
yeah another physician/dentist :) there are more people in this field doing stuff on the site than i thought
The stress of the job gets to you, so you need to find something else. And after a while, you're stressing about two things. 😁

This was such an amazing and heartwarming story!! Thanks for sharing it with us (the sweet & tobacco shop story, not the butcher one, even though I suppose that at that point in time, slaughtering animals in front of little children must have been considered par for the course in Cyprus).
It's amazing how small this world can be. When I mentioned Cyprus, what I expected was something along the lines of "where is that?" - but we actually get someone that used to live here and a sweet story to go along with that.

I live in Malaysia, quit my job about 8-9years ago, freelance a few years, trying the indie hacker ways for the past few years. I extend the runway by living in a affordable country with simple low cost lifestyle.
I work from home, co-working space too expensive for me. Thought of Digital Nomad, but I'm more productive at home with fast Internet and the necessary setup; instead I opt go holidays for a month yearly to fulfilled the urge to travel and explore new places. I thought I will go the Digital Nomad way when my business is profitable.

I don't do much lifestyle blogging, but I posted some posts on how we built it and some videos and pictures along the way.
awesome!! can you describe a random work day? As in, do you drive and code every day? or you just base yourselves in a place for a few days. And also, how do you deal with having no internet most of the time?
Travel nursing contracts last about 3 months. So typically we find an RV park that's close to the hospital.
Then I find a coworking space nearby and and try to go there as much as possible.
But we have an unlimited hotspot at home, so we're always with good internet.
I'm living in germany and I'm in the last year of med school. means working in a hospital 50h/week for 400€/month. when I come back after work I'm usually too tired to do anything big, but the weekends are the time where I get my projects forward

I live in San Francisco. I'm about a 20-minute walk from the Stripe office, but I work from home 9 days out of 10 because I love my setup here. I spend about 4 weeks per year traveling to other cities and countries with my girlfriend, and usually working from there. For example, I was in Buenos Aires for 2 weeks in January.
Since Stripe bought IH, I'm lucky enough to spend all my time working on it and nothing else. I'm a bit of a workaholic and easily spend 70+ hours a week on it.
WOW, 70+ hours even after the acquisition? There is nothing better than loving what you do, but those are some intense hours nonetheless!
Are you satisfied with your work/life balance? What are some of your hobbies outside of work? Do you tend to work every day, or keep weekends free, etc?
I love the IH podcast, so thanks for all of your effort making it awesome! Now go do something fun and non-work related :)
I spend a ton of time hanging out with my girlfriend, and a moderate amount of time reading (I really wish I had more time to read). My biggest hobby is probably mentorship. I'm almost always engaged in a months-long process of teaching a friend to code or helping a friend start a business. I exercise, too, but more out of a sense of obligation than enjoyment. 😝
Overall I'm not really the hobby type. It's hard to imagine a future where I'm not spending the vast majority of my waking time working on one thing in particular.
Hey, to each their own, right? As long as you're happy, that's what counts!
I hear ya on the exercising. I think it's the most important routine that keeps me sane, so I do it. Some kind of sport where I can be active and also competitive is the most enjoyable for me (e.g. raquetball).
I also love reading. I was just thinking yesterday that I'm watching too many TV shows that I don't really care about and should find another good fantasy book to read instead.

I'v always been an indie hacker. Never held regular job. Always lived off my software. Been working all kind of projects, mainly advanced web projects.
Lifestyle? It's been building a house, taking care for kids... They grew up so I guess I'm at the crossroads (launching my side project soon).

Slovenia is awesome. Loved every place of it. The problem is that for a roadtripper you run out of road pretty soon hehe :P Did you build your own house in the countryside? Like, did you have previous skills or how did you pull it out?
Heck I'm indie hacker so I bought and old one and renewated it! :-) Did alot myself. I'm top of the hill and view is all green perfect.
I live in the countryside and sometimes i joke it's like living on a discovery channel or ngc! :-) Kids love it (deer and phasans around the house) and as long as brodband is fast...

A couple of years ago I went from Barcelona to Istanbul and back with my super Micra hehe, on the way back I went to Ljubljana (which I loved), Bled, Bohinj, Triglav, Piran... really awesome little country :)

Living in Bangkok. Doing freelance work for about one day a week to pay the bills, and the rest of the time I spend blogging or working on my own projects. Also, I am not taking life too seriously at the moment.
Working from home mostly but also sometimes from coffee shops or the odd co-working space. Every day's schedule is different, but it usually includes a trip to the gym and some time sitting in a coffee shop and reading.

I am in Toronto, working in a startup and trying to get my own startup of the ground at the same time. Usually days are 10am-6pm writing code for work, 6pm-2am writing code for my own startup
I'm in Barcelona at the moment, as a digital nomad I had thought of waiting to get more profitable but I kind of fell into it, I had been living in Dublin, Ireland but then lost my lease on the apartment, cost of living is high in Dublin so decided to get on with it and go as a digital nomad. But I've been working remote and as an indie hacker for alot longer than I've been a digital nomad. I think you have to do the remote first and find your feet before going full digital nomad.
Mostly working from home (or hotels or where ever I'm sleeping), coffee shops or co working spaces I can wander in and out of, some around BCN have a nomad style rate so it's a few hours or days type offer instead of the month long. I left a reply above with a couple of spaces in Barcelona to check out, well one I really liked and another I will check out next week.
Isn't Barcelona (very) high cost of living though?
Honestly yes, Eating / drinking out costs a bit but it's in line with Dublin or London so more like what I'm used to.
Shopping and rent is lower than Dublin it evens out for me as a bit lower, it all depends where you are coming from really.
I want to disagree a little bit here, I think eating / drinking out can be ridiculously cheap. It's true that there are many expensive places but there are even more cheap places where food quality is still super good! :P
Oh sorry yes you are right, there is a huge variety of options to eat out and some really great places. It was more an observation I had that the prices are around the same as in Dublin,
But either way it's so worth it to come here and see and explore this city.

I live in Bangalore, India. I have tried building a succesful startup many times and failed. I got very low and went to Germany, worked for 2.5 years there. Now I am in a steady state of mind to try again.
I work remotely from southern CA for an NYC-based company. I keep east coast hours so work until around 3pm pst, go surf, then come home and jam on software projects with a great friend of mine pretty much every day
I live in São Paulo, Brazil. Married, on a day job as a front developer (which is a big change in itself, as one year ago my whole career was at marketing and sales).
I tried going fulltime on a angel-funded startup for one year in the past, but failed.
Now I am trying to build a bootstrapping business while still keeping my job.
I'm based in the Hudson Valley, about 90 miles north of NYC. I work from home for a company based in Brooklyn, and am very involved in the local tech scene.
Lately we've seen a lot more tech entrepreneurs moving to the area, including some bigger-name ones. The running joke about the Hudson Valley is that this is where people go once they've "graduated" from city life — that seems to be holding true. We've got a lot of people who are tired of the city, but not nearly old enough to consider retirement, so they're bringing their creative energy/skills upstate. So, even though I work from home, I don't really feel isolated here.

Hello Kat Kitay. I am based in Columbus, OH (hopefully the next site of Amazon HQ2!) Home of the Ohio State Buckeyes! I am currently retired! Been involved in computers in some way since 1992.
I live in India, i have quit my job 7 months back. I love travelling and decided to be a digital nomad. I have started building a cryptocurrency tool and have been working on it when i like and have been traveling different places. Now i work when at anytime i like, no pressure. When i feel tired I take a holiday. Currently I'm making 6K every month from my microstartup and plan to build more in future. I can say quitting is one of the best things i have ever done.

I live in Chicago and in a similar situation as you -- just put in my notice and when I'm fully quit, I'll probably WFH for a few months (or maybe try a coworking space) and then travel and see where I end up.

I spend 2-3 hours in traffic, but other than that, I quite like where I live.
Lisbon, Portugal. I work in digital marketing but spend most of my time trying to develop my side projects.
Valdivia, Chile – I moved to Chile because it allows easy self-employed immigration and stayed because Chileans are so friendly. The country's timezone is nice for occasional freelancing for US clients.

Lifestyle? Extremely comfortable and top notch. Immediate access to thousands of great restaurants, events, and the arguably the best place for entrepreneurship in the country.
Actually just swapped out my studio to live with a roommate to cut my rent in half, which is amazing.
In milan, italy studying and working in university libraries (free wifi, no noises and everyone's studying so you feel bad if you waste time).
i don't know why all the scrappy bootstrapped indie hackers aren't doing the same
I currently live in Bogota, Colombia. Paris before this. I tend to 'work from home' at different places. Home office is definitely better for me but that home moves around, but not too much. I realized I need to feel grounded someplace to get into a routine, even if that place changes a couple times a year.
Hong Kong / Jakarta. I am from Belgium! I work from a co-working space from 8am to 5-6pm, and work a little bit during the weekends too (preparing our content strategy or doing admin work). In the weekends I go out, and will try wakeboarding soon!
Australia. I have a successful app business. I tinker with features for the apps most of the time. I'm not sure where to go from here, I earn enough $, I guess I will travel now.
