Where should I monetize my Node.js course?
Hi all, after 8 years working with Node.js, including some high scalability environments (or at least they were to me, serving +1M req/s I have decided to create a course to share my knowledge and experience. I have worked also as an assistant teacher in some general scalability courses but never created an online course before.
Do you have any recommendations about where to put it to monetize it? Something like Udemy or is it better to host it and manage it by myself? Thanks for your feedback.
If you host it yourself be prepared to invest lots of time promoting it, building your own audience (e.g. on Twitter) etc, otherwise very few people will even know about your course let alone buy it.
Udemy can be a good option if you have less time to spend on promotion, but only if you can find an underserved topic. If you try searching for "node.js" on Udemy you'll find dozens of courses on Node.js already, some of them highly rated and with literally hundreds of thousands of students.
Perhaps if you target e.g. "Node.js scalability" more specifically you might have a chance to stand out, but then again I'm not sure how many students would search specifically for that. I think Udemy is better for beginner-level courses more than advanced ones.

I would advise you to sell and market it yourself. Hosting on a course platform like Udemy will get you peanuts also you are giving complete control over the monetization of your product to a third party. I will always advise against this.
Initially, a course platform might give you some traction but it's not worth it in the long run.
Depends on how you wanna monetize, some people just post it on YouTube and monetize the community
