Where to find programming learners?
Guys, I need to meet and discuss programming learners. What are the best communities on the internet with learners?
Some of the communities I found so far are:
- r/learnprogramming
- r/coding
Do you have anything to add? any leads?
You can probably also look through to find Discord channels dedicated to learning programming. And there's a subset of gaming communities which are focused on learning programming (think Minecraft modding communities).
This is huge.
In the gaming community in general, there are a lot of young folks learning to program specifically to extend their favorite games with mods.
Their interest starts out initially around the game itself and extending it, but they pretty quickly get drawn to more general software development. I've seen this particular story unfold many times now with some folks I've tutored before!
Yeah that's pretty much how I started with programming. Back in middle school I wanted to make hacks for Maplestory. Eventually I end up working at FB as a software engineer.
I'd suggest reaching out to college students that are early in their programming classes. They could also refer you to their friends/classmates, which may or may not be more valuable than a stranger on reddit.

You can check Meetups for popular web frameworks in your area. In my experience, there will often be newcomers trying to teach themselves and stay immersed at these events. Try checking out React meetup near you/online. I know when I was attending a full stack boot camp with a heavy focus on Angular we were encourage (sort of required) to attend meetups throughout the program and the whole cohort would attend frequently.
On that note, coursereport was at one point the authority in listing and reviewing bootcamps, has 750+ listed on that link, and would be a good place to start if you wanted to try getting in touch with those schools to see where the students hang out. Maybe some slack channels you can get involved in/etc. I think you’ll find the bootcamp community to be super inclusive and hungry/eager to learn/get involved.
