Where to invest in very early stage startups/side-projects?

Any of you guys ever bought shares of a business or side-project at very early stages? And if yes, how did it work out for you and where did you find it?

I doubt my ability to build something more everyday and i'm starting to think that buying would be a better way to go. If you have stories about that knid of investments i would be happy to hear it.
