Which cloud providers do you use and why?

Hey Indie Hackers community 👋🏼

I've heard a lot of nice things about the community so I finally decided to write my first post. Let's see how this goes...

I am the founder of Smoothy.cloud, an intelligent all-in-one cloud platform that enables developers to build, run, and scale any application stack on top of a cloud provider such as DigitalOcean, AWS, or Google Cloud without having to learn all the ins and outs of the cloud.

The idea is that you can obtain and manage servers from different cloud providers all through one and the same easy-to-use interface.

We currently have an integration with DigitalOcean and are looking to add support for a few other providers.

Therefore my question, which cloud providers do you use and why?

Heroku, it’s been incredible for us. Yes it is expensive, but we are a lean team and want to focus on development not DevOps. Plus the piece of mind knowing that our servers are being managed by experts that know what they are doing is worth it alone. If we had to have someone on the team with devops experience that would already be far more than our monthly Heroku bill.

Digital Ocean. I use a lot of AWS services at work but I find it overkill for my personal projects.

DO’s UI and pricing model are much easier to understand.

Big DigitalOcean fan, would probably check out Linode and Vultr if I moved off them for whatever reason.

I just started using Hatchbox by Chris from GoRails. I like it a lot!

Linode's been bae for a decade for me. In my comparisons of VPS providers, Vultr's been putting up some great benchmarks with their High Frequency plans (so if I weren't a loyal Linode user, they'd be my #2).

I see a lot of people below use traditional VMs? How do you deploy? Do you use docker, terraform or custom bash scripts?

I use Firebase since the integration with my Flutter app was very straight forward.

firebase (GCP). Simple and straightforward to use.

Heroku is the cloud provider of choice for me. There is no faster and easier way to get going quickly and have virtually no responsibility over infrastructure. It also scales incredibly well once you outgrow the low end hobby plans.

The problem of Heroku is that its costs increase faster. 50 USD/Mo for 1gb Ram seems a little bit high!

Don't get me wrong, I love heroku but lately we are looking for alternatives.
