Which platform to use for a newsletter?

I already started a LinkedIn newsletter and I'm planning to start an independent version of that newsletter, and I'm browsing around to see which option could work well for me.

What are your suggestions?

Have anyone used SendFox? I saw it on Appsumo, seems like a nice option.

We are using Customer.io mostly because we like its integration with Segment.

And since nobody has mentioned it here, I thought it's worth mentioning it. Check out Loops too. It's like Notion for emails.

Cool - thanks for sharing 🙌🏼

    2. 1

      Thanks Alfred!

      I think you’ll like what we’re building at loops.so

Send from your own domain, excellent deliverability, we have a free plan for early stage startups, Zapier integration (segment is in alpha) and just the best writing experience for email out there.

Let me know if you’d like to give it a try!

Hey there, I’m building an Open Source email newsletter tool as an indie hacker and I would be really interested in what you think about it and if suits your needs! You’ll especially love it if you enjoy writing Markdown :-)

You can check it out here: https://www.keila.io

You can try it out and look around the platform for free (and without credit card) and if you want to give it a try for actually sending your newsletter, you can get a 15% discount with code INDIEHACKERS.

If you have any questions, I’d be super happy to show you around the platform and help you set up your newsletter.

I use Mailchimp. Pretty standard but I think their deliverability is decent and the UX is good. Also free.

My primary newsletter is run on Mailchimp

I tell you to go for sure with Substack and BeeHiiv.

And in case you need to be more specific or choose only one platform, I would say Substack. However both are very good, I have tried a lot of others and definitely if you want speed and ease those two I mentioned above are good.

I highly recommend Convertkit, and it works really well for me. If you want to create an email course, this is hands down the best platform to do it, as the UI is intuitive and easier to grasp.

Convertkit Commerce also allows you to sell products plus if you upgrade convertkit, you get free access to sparkloop which allows you to grow through referrals.

I use Mailerlite. They are not without issues, but what I like about them:

    1. They charge per subscriber rather than per email. Since I sent one email every day, this works for me.
    2. Unlike Substack and Ghost, they allow me to create aesthetically pleasing emails
    3. Their live chat is always online, and responds within minutes

I love Substack too. It’s great with a platform adjusted to newsletters

Never heard of substack before but lots of recomendations here, looks interesting assuming the monetisation strategy is charge the subscribers.

But that depends a little on the plans for your newsletter.
    Some monetise access.
Some monetise the results of reading the content.

My primary newletter is run on mailchimp, supporting an ecommerce store so want free access and make money on sales from the promoted products.

Soon to launch newsletter will be on convertkit since I want their power of automations, landing pages and segmentation (mailchimp can do... but convertkit better on this stuff)

I use substack for my product management newsletter: Rabbit Hole 🐰 https://itsrabbithole.substack.com

  11. 2

    I would use Substack.

  12. 2

It seems like Twitter is going to add Substack features soon :)

Twitter VS Substack. Will people be able to subscribe / donate to pieces of writing like this?
    Elon > Absolutely

  13. 2

Substack is the in-thing. I'll advise anyone to use the in-thing.

  14. 2

Wherever you have the largest following is the best place to start.

  15. 2

SendFox is great for helping you grow. It makes feeds from your twitter and YT and auto-composes draft emails for you to share the content. My old roommate switched to it (from ConvertKit) and started growing WAY faster.

I started a newsletter 6 months ago, I started with Revue. It was VERY bad, then moved to BeeHiiv.

Beehiiv is a great tool for newsletters, it comes with great deliverability and all the features you want.

But, I finally moved to Substack because of their embedded growth mechanism. More than 15% of my growth now comes from Substack itself, and it keeps growing!

    1. 1

Thanks for sharing your experience, just signed up for Substack 👌🏼

    2. 1

What are the growth mechanisms on Substack? The recommended?

      1. 2

The recommended + the ability to connect with your twitter account + the home page

    3. 1

What's wrong with Revue? I like that it's a one-click subscribe on Twitter profile itself.

      Is it possible with Substack?

      1. 2

I believe Revue is shutting down by the end of the year.

        1. 1

Where that info is coming from that Revue is closing? Just wanted to migrate to Revue as they have the best email editor. The only newsletter tool that I liked to write in.

      2. 1

50% of emails went to spam, sometimes more.

I have the one-click callout on my Twitter profile, and I import new subs every week manually.

(you can do it automatically with a lot of other platforms tho, check https://pollinate.email/

        1. 1

Ah, thanks for the recommendation. Will be using this.

  17. 2

I’ve used Mailchimp and Substack… personally i like Substack.

    1. 1

      Thanks for sharing 🙌🏼

  18. 2

Substack is very popular. Personally, I use Ghost.

    1. 1

Ghost is a good option too 👌🏼

  19. 2

I think Beehiiv and Substack are pretty close in competition. They have solid referral programs that help with marketing your newsletter.

    1. 1

Thanks for the suggestions, need to check them out 🙌

  20. 1

We use substack at askGenie (https://askgen.ie), but I also want to try loops, but I don't have an invitation code

  21. 1

You can use Some of the best email newsletter tools available today are Moosend, HubSpot, Constant Contact, Mailchimp, Sendinblue, Campaign Monitor, AWeber, and GetResponse.

  22. 1

By default I would go with the standard on the market that already started to tackle email spam. The last thing you want is to see your emails going to spam. So I would say MailChimp. Plus there is a free tier so you pay as you grow.

Their UI is however very hard to navigate it is a big pain point for me. And since they added their new user journeys feature, they try to sell it and the old UI is hidden behind a "use classic automation" link. Once that part handled, you should be good. I kinda like their hosted form so they handle everything for me : validation, unsubscribe, easy to share with call to actions, etc...

    Good Luck !

    1. 1

That's a good point - thanks for sharing your experience 🙌🏼

  23. 1

Why not use Substack? They help you grow which is way more than any of the other providers.

    1. 1

      Yeah, that's a huge advantage 👌🏼
