Who are your advisors?
As solo adventurer's, It's best to acknowledge the fact that we will hit a lot of road bumps and we need the support of people.
Support can come in many forms,
but the most important form is going to be advice on what you are building.
Many successful products have board of advisors who pitch in their knowledge and will vouch for you and your product if need be.
Having a board of advisors can be beneficial in many ways like,
- They will hold you accountable for your work.
- If they are good at what they do, they will encourage you to deliver quality output.
- They will help you course correct and stay on the path.
- When launching, they will help you gain some initial traction that you may not be able to get single-handedly.
Have you put together a "board of advisors" for any of your products?
Who do you take advice from while building your product?
Advisors need to buy into the team and project.
Finding that can be tricky, so I don’t have formal advisors in my companies. Just adhoc advise from people.
I mentor one or two people where I’ve agreed with their vision etc. Happy to advise more if we click.
So for advisors I generally reach out to my friends.
Also I reach out to people over LinkedIn and see what they think about my product idea
Well those are one off opinions.
When you are reaching out to friends and connections, you're only going to get an opinion. They do not have any vested interest in your product.
An advisor would be someone who is with you throughout your journey. Guiding/helping you in any way possible whenever they can.
Advisors should ideally have a permanent seat.
Here's a crazy idea.. hear me out,
How about a group on Indiehackers to find advisors for your project and not co-founders.
In return you must publicly mention those Advisors on your product website

Or why will someone be interested in being your advisors?
How does one convince someone to be an advisor?
Pitch your Idea, show them progress and ask for advice
I'm sure people would want to be part of an idea they appreciate.

I suspect it has more to do with the person than the idea...
I would love to be on the advisory board for someone like @whitandersonIV no matter what product he builds

Wow, this is a cool conversation - I've never considered an official advisory board for my side projects, maybe I should 😅.
The way I've always done it is having peer advisors(other makers) be the accountability & advice for my projects. We've organized weekly virtual standups which kind of acts as weekly advisors to track progress and next steps.
Exactly! We’ve all been doing it informally ..in fact this very site(IH) is an informal advisory panel for solopreneurs!

Yup, this is where an advisor would be so useful. just to help you brainstorm and move ahead.
Honestly, I find it a little arrogant when people complain about ideas being stolen. whatever we can think of, has been thought of by atleast 1 of the 7 billion people on this planet.
What makes all the difference is whether we can execute the idea, get people excited about it, scale it with constant innovation and sustain the growth. That's what differentiates facebook from myspace or orkut even.
I think, and it's only a guess at this point but if we publicly ask for help for an idea people will be willingly to be advisors.
