Who wants to help me solve housing?
Hi all, I'm looking for co-founders interested in helping me solve the housing crisis. My plan is to essentially design 3D printable apartments that can be stacked together like legos.
There is a business reason why this may actually have legs.
In particular I need people with a background in or understanding of any of the following:
- Structural engineering
- CAD
- 3D Printing
- Experience with VCs
- Getting startup investment from local governments
- Architecture
- ML for structural engineering testing
Open to other skills since I don't yet know what this concept will require. HMU.
Love the ambition unfortunately have nothing much to add here besides experience in 3D graphics and visualization.
But I think you need some material science people to find out if you can actually stack this things on top.
I've seen a dude creating a concrete pouring large scale 3D printer with a nozzle on an large crain-arm. Except he does not print individual components but all in one go.
That's an interesting idea as well.

You listed all the skills you need and presumably don't have, but not what you're bringing to the business. Having an idea isn't enough, and not having any relevant experience also doesn't help your pitch. If you assembled the team with the skills you listed above, why would they need you?

I am also working in housing. Something that is nice for apartment style and is built to stack is recycled shipping containers! Not exactly what you are looking for, but just something to open up your options!
I know used shipping containers are cheap to buy, but I've always wondered about the modifications required to use them for housing. Are the corrugated side panels kept, or are they replaced with insulated panels? Or a combination?
It's an interesting idea for sure. Although I tend to assume (maybe incorrectly) that the modifications required to get them turned into housing usually outweigh any benefit.
Its only more expensive if you hire out for the metal work. If you are up for the fun challenge of learning how to use a plasma cutter, then you'll be fine!
Your business idea is indeed brilliant. Unfortunately, I can't help you, but I am sure you will find the partners you are looking for. The real estate business is a continuously growing industry, and therefore it is an area you can be successful in.
I rent a small flat, which takes me almost half of my wage, but when I came to the USA, the renting cost was even higher.
However, after reading an article on https://moneysavedmoneyearned.com/how-much-rent-can-i-afford/, I realized how much rent can I afford.
Then I decided to rent a cheaper and smaller flat, so I could afford to buy an apartment soon.
As probably the only structural engineer on IH (lol), I'm going to give you my 2 cents.
Drop the 3d printing aspect. Its not the right technology for the problem. Its pretty much only good for unreinforced concrete, which in turn is pretty much only good for 1 story huts, domes, etc in non-seismic areas. Modular construction is a great idea. We're only now just scraping the surface of it in North America, and its a potential multi-billion dollar industry. But 3d printing only adds additional problems, without having any compelling advantage.
