Why not free: I considered it, but free + ad-supported felt wrong for a finance app — I didn't want to build a business model around showing ads . €5 one-time covers my time without needing ongoing monetization pressure. Happy to hear if this is a dealbreaker for people though — genuinely curious how others think about pricing for tools like this.
Why no backend/subscription: Keeping it fully local-first means your financial data never leaves your device. The tradeoff is the Finnhub API key setup, which can be daunting for someone with no experience about it, although I did setup a pretty nice on-boarding flow for this. If there's enough interest, a future premium tier with a hosted proxy (removing that step) is on the table.
Why Android first: Practical reasons — larger market share, I am on Android myself and Kotlin/Compose let me move fast as a solo dev. Cross-platform (likely Kotlin Multiplatform) is something I'd explore if there's traction. I do realize that iPhone users are more likely to spend money on apps.
On the analytics: The CAGR/time-to-double/quarterly report stuff came from wanting to answer "is my money actually working for me" beyond just a balance number — happy to go deeper on how any of these are calculated if useful. Also open to feedback on metrics you would like to see.
Genuinely here for feedback — if something feels confusing or missing, let me know and I'll factor it into the next update.
The local-first angle is interesting because it makes several decisions reinforce each other.
The €5 one-time payment, no backend, and privacy positioning all feel internally consistent.
The part I'd be curious about is whether users see the API key setup as part of the value tradeoff or as friction that needs to disappear.
That is what I'm wondering as well. Setting up the API is incredibly easy but I can see how it can turn people off when they are not familiar with it.
It would be very difficult to support the app without a subscription if it would not have the users own API key. Of course in the beginning (or if the app never gains traction) the free tier of the key could work with backend and no need for user setup.
Possibly.
The reason I'd still be careful is that I don't think the interesting part is the setup flow itself.
I think there's a bigger decision sitting underneath it.
I wouldn't do it justice in a thread.
If you're interested, drop your email and I'll send over the fuller thought.
