The Unseen Battle: Why Your Website Visitors Disappear
If you run a blog, a SaaS, or any small online business, you’ll know the buzz of seeing new traffic land on your site. It feels like progress. But here’s the hidden battle most of us face: after that first visit, the majority of people never come back. In many cases, 80% or more vanish for good.
That isn’t just a missed opportunity. It’s a serious flaw in how many of us approach growth. Without repeat visitors, you end up stuck in what I call “acquisition mode,” constantly hustling for the next click, the next campaign, the next spike of traffic. It’s draining, expensive, and frankly unsustainable.
Why Retention Matters More Than Traffic
The truth is, repeat visitors are where the real value lies. They’re the people who actually convert into customers, who share your work with others, and who tell Google your site is worth ranking. Without them, your marketing spend never compounds; it just evaporates.
I learnt this the hard way. Even when my traffic looked decent on paper, the lack of retention meant I wasn’t building a real community or a reliable revenue stream. Growth felt like running in circles.
Finding a Better Way to Bring People Back
The turning point came when I stopped waiting for people to remember me and started looking for ways to remind them. That’s when I tried push notifications.
They’re deceptively simple: a small nudge on someone’s device that says, “Hey, something new is here.” No inbox clutter. No, hoping the algorithm favours you today. Just a direct line back to your audience. And honestly? They worked better than I expected. People started coming back, engagement lifted, and I finally felt like I was building momentum rather than chasing it.
Why We Built LaraPush
Of course, there was a catch. The mainstream push services got expensive very quickly. As subscriber numbers grew, so did the monthly bills, punishing success instead of rewarding it. On top of that, I hated the idea that my audience data lived on someone else’s servers.
That frustration is what led us to build LaraPush, our own self-hosted push notification platform. The idea was simple: create a tool we could fully own, without subscriptions scaling out of control or third-party lock-in.
Going self-hosted gave us:
Freedom from runaway costs – no more pricing that punishes growth.
Data sovereignty – complete control over our own audience.
Flexibility – the ability to tailor it to our exact needs.
It wasn’t just about saving money. It was about creating a long-term growth engine we could trust and control.
Over to You
For us, push notifications are now a key part of our retention playbook. But they’re not the only way to solve this problem.
So I’m curious, how are you tackling the “one-time visitor” challenge? Are you leaning on email, notifications, communities, or something else entirely? I’d love to hear what’s worked (or hasn’t) for you.
