Why are users downloading and signing up for our app but not using it?

Hi everyone,

We recently started marketing our savings group app (saving groups is an immigrant practice of saving money with friends and family by pooling money and getting payouts when needed).

We have been getting a modest but steady flow of downloads and sign ups. However, after a month of signups, I don't see anyone using the app to do what it is meant to do which is to create saving groups.

I sent a survey last week to understand why users weren't using it and didn't get very many responses.

I don't want to continue marketing if users are not really interested in using the app. That said, we have seen a growth in organic traffic and downloads.

What could we be doing at this juncture?

Would be great to hear thoughts from folks who've been here.

Thanks!

    • How do you onboard users on the App?
    • Can they see how to product will be when populated with data on the onboarding? Or they have to create a group and start using to get to know the interface?
    • When do users stop using the App? Do they create a group? Do they invite the family members? Do the family members accept the invite and download the app?
    • Do you guys do any kind of e-mail notification? You can prop up usage with e-mail marketing, things like showing how can one get value from your product, reminding then to save, etc

I think you can answer most of these questions with a more data usage collection and with that get a more clear view.

Thanks so much for your response. It does help clarify a lot of things in my head.

The user flow is pretty linear - signup, validate ID, link bank acct, and then invite family and friends. We see a drop off in number of users at each point. We haven't had any group with accepted invites so the problem lies there maybe.

We have email notifications when the users finish certain milestones like signing up, etc. Mostly the emails are tied up to the app usage and we don't really use them for marketing. We can definitely try using email to understand the under usage. For now, we just don't know exactly what the messaging should be to make the users give us feedback or use the product.

        Glad that I could help.

Btw the App idea is really cool. Here in Brazil, group saving is a very common practice, but mostly low-income/education families from what I've seen.

If the product was launched on our market I can see it being useful, but also can see it being hard to create adoption, because those people are not very tech-savvy(here in Brazil, don't know how it is in the US).

Maybe try to get more data about your users in the onboarding, their age, demography, etc.

        Good luck with your product!

I didn't realize that group savings was practiced in Brazil. Good to know. Our audience is primarily Caribbean in the US. Thanks for all your feedback.

I was looking for something like this specifically for my family. How is growth going for you now?
